If she has a good UPS and her setup is pluged into it, the damage should go to the UPS, which generally has overvoltage protection.

Yeah no not at all. A UPS will help protect against surges but a strike to your house or power line near your house will fry everything plugged into the wall. If a UPS could stop lightning then we could be harnessing it for power

In theory your stuff should be protected, and only the UPS should fry. BUT, you never know with these things. If lightning actually hits your house or the transformer feeding into your house, its anybody's call as to what will actually happen.

Use at your own risk.

If it's good quality, it should in theory protect your computer. And the ups itself may get broken depending on how strong/how close the lighting is to you.

iv never had a problem in an apartment building or tile roof. i wouldn't do it with a metal roof. iv heard houses hit by lightning everything that is plugged in gets fried even the toaster

A decent UPS should have a surge protector built in. It is also worth noting that homes are designed to prevent a lightning strike from getting to your outlets (you would melt a lot of stuff and probably start a fire if you attempted to run the 100MV + potential of lightning through your house wiring, never mind frying anyone who happened to be holding an electronic device at the time). If your house is struck there are paths built in to provide a safe path to ground for the strike. The bigger concern is when a telephone pole or other piece of power infrastructure is hit. There are protections built into the supply to limit the spike to your house and this is the exact scenario surge protectors are designed to defend against. I would be more concerned about the potential data corruption from a sudden power loss though the UPS should protect you from this as well for a few minutes until you can properly shut down your PC.

 

TL;DR: You are probably going to be fine but I wouldn't recommend using valuable hardware during a storm.

UPS will get fried if you take a direct hit to your house or a utility pole near you.. Believe me when I say this, in the field I work in I've walked in to server rooms where the servers we dead because the building took a direct hit and everything was dead. All the network cables were fused to the devices and all the expansion cards were fused to the motherboard. Even the plugs were fused to the UPS and servers. So no a UPS won't protect you in a thunder storm, those are built to deal with minor surges/brown outs and black outs from you electric company. A major surge will still fry your UPS even a quality one from a reputable brand.

It's impossible to provide a solid answer as it is not possible to predict what can occur due to the large amount of power. So in theory it should fry the UPS and save things down the line but not a guarantee.

My neighbor's house got hit a few years back; it set the roof on fire where it hit and fried every single electronic device that was plugged in in the house. The house I'm in now had a strike pretty close earlier this summer. I was out of town, so I had unplugged my computer, however the router wasn't so lucky. The modem survived fine, but the router had taken the hit. It still turned on, but it could not connect. Both of them were plugged into the same surge protector, so I'm not sure why one went and the other didn't, but if you're in a lightening prone area, you should probably avoid using electronics during a storm. It depends on your house though too; if you are the only home on the top of a hill, you're probably going to end up with more direct hits to your house than if you're in a single story home surrounded by taller buildings, trees and other houses. And keep in mind, a direct hit is probably going to be catastrophic for nearly everything plugged in (and potentially the entire house itself), near strikes and general power surges should be handled by a decent surge protector, power conditioner or UPS. But even then, I wouldn't do anything of too much importance on the computer in the middle of a thunderstorm.

Given the sheer amount of voltage, a consumer UPS isn't likely going to afford much protection. Much like using a regular body vest to take a .50 bullet.

If you plug in a bunch of surge protectors, so a surge protector plugged into another surge protector, will that help at all?

A ups is mainly for maintaining power for a period of time to allow for a normal shutdown until power returns I think? 

 

Whether or not a ups has a surge protector I think it be smart to use a dedicated surge protected power strip.  One with a high level of surge protection.

 

Also I'm pretty sure that in the event of a surge actually being stopped or simply hitting the surge protector strip you're supposed to just replace it because stopping a surge damaged the capacity of thr strip to block future surges.

 

I wish I could remember where I heard all that from but it makes sense I hope.

Your not suppose to as it actually lessens the surge capability since the components will be in parallel. Also it won't protect against lightning, you would be better off with installing a whole home surge/lighting suppressor which is designed to sacrifice itself if there is a huge spike from lightning.

So here is my anecdote about lightning. I few months ago the tree next to our house got hit by lightning. We lost the following items.

 

1 cable modem

3 cable set top boxes

4 ethernet switches, every one in the house.

1 HP Stream Mini

1 Canon SL1 DSLR camera

 

Everything except the camera was plugged into a good quality surge strip.

 

The tree is only 5-6 feet from both the power line and the cable line to the house. Best I can tell from the pattern of damage the lightning either jumped to or induced a spike in the coax cable which then passed through the cable modem to the ethernet switches.

 

All of the ethernet switches in the house died. Seemingly saving most of PC's. Only loosing the HP Stream Mini.

 

The DSLR camera was running on an AC adapter that was plugged directly into an outlet. So it likely took a direct hit via a jump to or an induced spike on the AC line.

A lightning bolt can be up to 120 million volts (the length of the bolt determines the voltage), On AVERAGE a lightning bolt will release around 30,000 (can be up to 200,000) amps. (These numbers are point of impact numbers, not what is going to get in your house from a nearby strike.)

 

 

If you are sitting at your computer protected by you typical residential surge suppressor and a lightning strike occurs nearby, will it fry your computer is not the real question (it will). The real question is will it fry you? (The answer to that question is "maybe, how lucky are you that day?)

Surge protectors help greatly and a ups will disconnect itself from the grid when the voltage goes to high. a surge/ups protects you from surges caused by grid activity and would protect from distant lightning strikes.... but it in no way will handle a full on strike, not even close.....
