If it's 60ishC on the outside of the plastic case.... how freaking hot must it be inside?

not the actual outside, its aimed at the air vent which is the exhaust for the heatsync. would be weird if it was not really hot. 60 degrees is pretty respectable for that. it would be like aiming at the fan grill of your computer :P

1. Yeah this looks super fake. I don't think they even make plastic that melts at 140F.

2. For the love of Gaben can we please stop calling things "gate".

140F isn't really that hot. Seems like Sony bet too heavily on their casing here rather than any wrongdoing from AMD.

its standard PVC, not thermoplastic. THus it will start deforming at 70c

Seems very fake, or something else was involved, the console would shutdown if it reached 100C, and most plastics would melt way higher then that.

well spotted. most likely a blowtorch or lighter. The melting pattern doesnt make sense for an internal heat-source

I'm a murican and I hate it too.

i especially hate when people use imperial in places where it's universally standardized not to... such as PC temps...

Pretty much this: While I woulnd't expect premium brushed aluminum something that was a little bit more resilent or some sort of thermal padding around this areas would have easily avoided this. Looks like a thoroughly engineering fail on Sony's part or another fuck up of someone late in the process switching materials to save some bucks.

if I'm seeing it right, it's right in the fan and radiator area

correct. Although, the melting pattern doesnt seem consistent with internal heat.

melting plastic contract TOWARDS the source of the heat. If the heat was all from the inside, the whole lid would be slightly buckled and discoloured.

ALSO, it appears like the images in the OP is taken HEAD ON. Which is a big nono when doing thermal shots, as the heat from your own body will radiate and reflect from the surface giving false readings.

I do thermal imaging at work, standing right infront of the thing you are taking picture of, can cause the temperatures to increase by 10-20C depending on how close you are to the thing you are imaging.

You also learn this when taking courses in professional thermal imaging.

again, to restate the obvious. the casing is made of PVC, not thermo-plastic.

PVC begins deforming at 70C.... and PVC bends INTO the spot heated... that spot that is melted does not make sense for internal heat. If that was the case, the entire lid and side would buckle. Not just a small spot.

The only way you should reach these temps is to operate the unit in a room FAR above its ambient operating temperatures and or by covering its inlet vents.

my bet is that some idiot took a blowtorch to it, or propane burner in order to cause a furore. For consoles to melt due to cheap plastic? Made by Sony? come on. Sony is known for overengineering things, playstation is the only department they got that is doing extremely well, it makes no sense for them to cut corners on a product which is expected to deliver quality.

From looking at the tear down video it does seem like the apu sits right up against that side of the system. But the melting pattern does look suspect.
