Depends on the purpose. 1080 will be far easy to cool and also use less electricity. dual 980ti's will probably give you more raw power.

1 great GPU is always better than 2 good GPU's

Plus many games dont have good SLI support, and the performance scaling is no-where near good 1/2 the time

Personally, id wait a few months until the 1080ti is released.

I would personally stick to the 1080.

Much less heat and noise, and better performance in all the games and programs that can't use multi-GPU.

Also newer software features.

Depends on the game. Every game I have ever played supports sli. And the 1 great card theory only works with the best card. The fact most results only show 10-15 frames which isn't much. Two cards still beat one in sythentic and I notice marginal gains with a single card. For the price of two 980ti's I'd rather go for a 1080. If those were my only choice anyway.

ok, well if he does the 2 980ti for 750 then you should get those as they are miles faster when they work in sli, which is most AAA games and when a game doesnt support sli, its not really much slower :)

Anecdotal.

Me : "Every game I have ever played only supports one GPU."

And the "SLI theory" only works when you have already 1 best card and you can't buy anything better, in this case would be a titan XP.

The way to get better performance than a titan XP is to add another titan XP.

Unless you already have a titan XP, SLI is a bad decision and you should always sell your current GPU to buy a better one.

Nobody cares about synthetic tests, it is real world performance what matters.

And no, there are barely any games that support multi-GPU out of the tens of thousands of games and programs that exist.

The ones that DO support multi-GPU on average have a 150% performance increase which is not even worth twice the price, heat, and noise.

AND the fact that the 900 series is one generation older with far less features and less driver optimizations.

Both of my 1080 have had decent performance. My old ass Titans still beat them at everything. And the weak b stock 980's were better too. The 1080 does put out more frames average which account for something I guess. And yes no one cares about benchmarks which is why they're in every youtube video and even this site has a dedicated section for it.

so I would get an xp prolly stil will as the past 2 gens worth of cards seem to be a waste aside from a Titan. But I still say to go for the 1080 between the two choices.

Do you not watch LTT videos or something?

They do REAL WORLD TESTS of games performance, not synthetic benchmarks.

There is a difference between real world and synthetic.

Nobody gives a crap about synthetic except people with too much money.

They do both. 2 is better then one in the real world.

I assume he looked at the games he planned on playing to see if they support sli. He didn't say he preferred one over the other. Real world sli games, 2 beats one. Especially in this case. Would also have to consider if he plans on playing a real game on multiplayer and care about frame time over fps. Or single player where it wont matter how bad one is.

Where is my real world testing would matter. Lower frame time beats out frame rate any day. Unless all you care about is a high frame rate spread sheet like a ltt video. None of them are decent fps gamers so they wouldn't know smooth online gameplay if they were paid to do it.

But yes, in real world framerate ltt spread sheets the 1080 is king, aside from the superior xp. And would be the obvious choice for those who will solely buy or advice purchase of a product based off  that.

I just bought a second MSI 980 Ti OC'd edition for my build. Most games I have played have seen a considerable boost in performance. They run a bit hot tho... at least the top one. I Would say if you cannot get the two cards for less than 350 each just wait..... unless its two strix, kingpins, or crazy hybrid shit.... then it might be worth it.
