Overclocking 4770K iGPU on stock cooler?

I run a 4770K at stock speeds using a stock cooler (specs in signature). I like playing H1Z1, but even at the lowest settings at 768p, I barely get 20-30 FPS. Is it safe to OC my iGPU (HD 4600), even if only a little bit? If it is safe, please let me know how I would go about doing this. Also, how about RAM? Would OCing that help at all or not really?

Dude I wouldn't even think about trying. Invest in an air cooler like the evo 212 if you don't want to spend much.

Yeah that's what I thought lol but thanks anyway

 

Will probably wait till Black Friday and just get a RX 460 or something similar since I only play occasional light games like H1Z1, TF2, etc

integrated graphics do benefit from ram speeds a bit, but don't expect any big gains, overclocking graphics tend to net small gains might be slightly less jittery but it's not gonna be comfortably playable unless you get a graphics card

OCing your GPU is unlikely to give you more than 2-3 fps, so instead why not invest on a GT 730 64-bit GDDR5? It will be enough to run the game well.

The GT 730 is weaker than the iGPU.

Well, the iGPU doesn't dissipate much heat at all, so I would try it out anyway. Also try and OC your memory, if you can. Maybe you can get enough gain to sustain constant 30fps?

It is not.

 

The 128-bit version is. But the 64-bit has an updated core compared to the GT 740, a GK208 with 384 CUs and 902MH base clock. It should wipe the floor with the HD graphics 4600.

just buy a gtx 1050 or a rx 460 when you get a chance. its not worth it.

Manual OCing RAM besides the XMP settings, is overall not recommended + the gain is little. Best option for you is a dedicated GPU.

And can you back up the claim that overclocking RAM will net little gains when gaming on integrated graphics?

It won't provide much of a boost for the iGPU, since its only a 1600MHz kit, with what appears to be only a small heatspreader (or a sticker). And the difference even with faster kits is small.

It won't put his fps up to 60 suddenly. The fps gain is overall not much depending on RAM and in this case he's held back more by the iGPU power. Note here that I am not saying (or have said) it doens't help the iGPU. Only that the gain is little.

 

Why I don't recommend it for him is because he has no experience with it (atleast hink I saw him mention it somewhere). Since the gain is overall small and a misbehaving RAM OC can be hard to diagnose, it would be more sensible for him to not do it. Just keep it on speeds it is intended to work on is the safer way. He can do it manual by reading the RAM specs or use XMP.

You guys are right, the gains aren't huge. That said there is no risk to overclocking memory as long as the user doesn't dial in more than 1.65V. It might not be worth it because it's a process that takes a bunch of time. That much is for the OP to decide.

There is no risk true, however there is no real benefit since the sticks won't overclock high enough to benefit any program that can make use of faster RAM. I actually don't know if the lifespan would be shortened though as I've never run anything newer than SDRAM overclocked for extended periods of time, as good DDR2 kits are expensive as all hell, and it cost a lot for just 1 2GB DDR2 1066 stick.

I have heard around that RAM just doesn't age, I'm not sure why it doesn't or if it just ages very slowly, but for instance people who do used builds never hesitate to buy used RAM that works.

Overall RAM is reliable I think. Would say that most RAM issues are caused by users, by not paying attention and using incompatible settings.

 

Fingers crossed, but actually never had any builds made, that had RAM issues that where related to the RAM hardware itself.
