Verizon buying Vessel was a good thing.

barkloaf

Hi all, I'm giving my opinion today.

So, I'm sure you all know, Vessel is being bought buy Verizon and will be dissolving.

Verizon is pretty greedy, right?

Well, sure.

But this isn't bad. Here's the thing: Vessel ISN'T profitable. It isn't. Nor is YouTube. The only reason why YouTube exists is because it's owned by a gigantic company. Vessel isn't. And really, I'm sure Vessel wouldn't exist by Summer of 2017 if Verizon didn't buy them. And really, by Verizon buying them, they're sending the dudes over there off with a whatever dollar golden parachute. Sure, now Vessel doesn't exist, and LMG and others might not get as much money. But, really, Vessel would have shut down soon anyway. Verizon, if they're nice enough, might actually make something like how Vessel works, now that they have the technology.

What do you guys think?

Why was vessel not profitable? I'm sure many people paid for a subscription, and hosting videos costs MUCH less than 3USD a month per person

Except YouTube is profitable. It's one of the most profitable divisions in Google. YouTube is so profitable that dozens content creators and groups can make hundreds of thousands to millions, and that is just a small fraction of what Google is making off of them.

Vessel wasn't profitable because it didn't offer enough for the subscription, in comparison to YouTube (and the fact that it's free), to maintain decent subscriber base.

Break off your chains

And look what I've found in the dirt.

Why did you come to this world?

The blood is on your hands.

So as you've all have heard by now, Vessel is shutting down, which to me, is sad. I joined Vessel solely to just watch Linus's early releases but now that the platform is gone I have no where to watch my daily dose of the Linus Media Group team. After watching Linus's status update on Vessel, I came up with an idea. Here is some background before I begin, I've worked as a Web Developer for about a year at a sports broadcasting company where I was first contracted to create a video management CMS. I also have extensive knowledge of HLS streaming using the JWPlayer and live broadcast technologies. Now that the mini-resume is complete, here's the idea; build a early access release platform that can also be built to handle live streams for a special access pass or something like that, let the marketing guys handle the purpose, i'm just the developer. Ad support, if wanted, is easy to integrate as well as statistics. This platform wouldn't be far off from my original CMS I built for the sports broadcasting company. I ask that if anyone from the LMG team who is just a tad bit interested by my proposal, send me a private message and I'll send over a copy of my resume and answer any questions about my proposal ether through email or over the phone. If your a Vessel user like me, leave a comment with ideas and suggestions and help bring some attention to my proposal so that we can get a replacement to our beloved Vessel.

Yes but I enjoyed the early releases because I could watch both the new release on Vessel and the release on YouTube, which I had watched a week before but had forgotten about it. Not to familiar with YouTube Red but I do know that its too expensive for me, I already pay my $10 dues to Spotify every month, I really don't want to add another $10 to that. That was another reason why I liked Vessel, it was only $3 a month.

YouTube Red includes Google Play Music, which has pretty much the same (if not better) song selection as Spotify. Plus YT Red allows you to play videos in the background, so anything that's not on Google Play Music you can listen to on YouTube. It's also $10 a month.

Cancel Spotify, get YouTube Red. You're getting way more for you money.

I have a suggestion too, much simpler, but rudimentary. With the already existing donator tiers, there are subforms exclusive to them. My suggestion is to integrate it into the forum buy posting there early instead.

Please quote our replys so we get a notification and can reply easily. Never cheap out on a PSU, or I will come to watch the fireworks.

I see what you're saying but unfortunately I'm stuck with Spotify, I've had an account for 3 years and have made tons of playlist but I'm sure future me may favor the savings over the playlist. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!

Using the forum API you could just use the forum paywall for donors for the early access platform. That would streamline the payment system into one hub, great idea @rn8686!

So, silly question as I would assume it's been discussed, but have any of the LTT/LMG people thought about replacing Vessel with their own controlled video distribution website? I'm sure you guys could pull it off. I mean if MotorTrend, HotRod and others can make it on www.motortrendondemand.com then why couldn't you, with some affiliates?

It seems like the best way to continue your premium fans' subscription services, and it also seems obvious for a tech site.

Just a thought.

Totally different customer range and company formats, viewers etc etc etc.

Luke is looking sexy. Why doesnt Luke have any earrings like our sexy man, Linus?

Luke could get away with a ball stud in his left ear. Adds coolness and a fresh vibe.

No, I guess I wasn't clear. They should do something like "LinusOnDemand.com" themselves. I was using MotorTrendOnDemand as an example.

I suppose it would depend on content quality like anything else. They know their audience.

I have watched a dozen or two vids from our cool cat Linus, and I am done. Now I just look at titles here in chat. I gave up on iPhone 7 vid quickly.

So you are suggesting Linus set up a system where by Elite paying customers get vids earlier then everyone else, by a week. Is that it?

Linus would have to analyze his pay stream.

Considering the fact that LinusTechTips is the biggest channel on Vessel, and that many people (including me) subscribed to Vessel only for Linus' videos, they could probably pull off adding early access to the linustechtips.com website.
