it seems like things are getting better AMD lets hope ZEN and VEGA are good and make AMD profitable again

AMD has announced their Q3 2016 earnings, showing a massive increase in revenue and a significant reduction in debt. This quarter AMD has managed to liquidate $1.022 Billion dollars of outstanding debt, which means that starting in Q4 2016 the company will need to pay $55 million less annually in interest. 
 
The companies revenue has increased to $1307 million, which is an increase of 27% compared to last quarter and an increase of 23% compared to Q3 2015. This increase in revenue is due to increase in GPU sales, semi-custom SoC sales and a reduction in the operating loss of several divisions.

AMD's Lisa Su has stated that AMD's product lineup for 2017 will be the best that AMD has had in over a decade, with AMD's Zen and Vega GPUs finally hitting the market. Will these products gain AMD some much-needed market share from Nvidia and Intel?

Glad to see earnings increasing. Maybe one day they will be able to afford r/d and can compete against intels top prices processors and lower the price.

Looks pretty decent considering they're still selling old Bulldozer-derived CPUs.

 

The share price dropped though, for some reason.

Aw yeah. Awesome news! I'm excited for the future of amd. Sucks that Intel and nvidia have enough money to run them down if they want to though.

As i see the most important detail of this quarter is the debt reduction 1022 million $ its a lot. and it releases 55 millions in interest annually, and i hope they apply this money in R&D.

Glad to see AMD back on track. Hope they can use the earning to do more R&D and product supply. Rx480 8Gb is the same price as gtx1060 6gb at where I live, which sucks.

The source OP have is not quiet clear tho. seems like the news is good but not good enough to pull AMD out of the net loss.

 

GAAP: general accepted accounting principle, so non-GAAP one may not give a objective figure.

I'm not sure how people are confusing this earnings report as good news for AMD.

 

  • Net loss of $406m, twice as bad as the year-ago's $197m loss. In non-GAAP terms, AMD made a profit of $27m, up from a $136m loss this time last year, but as we all know: non-GAAP is the Enron of accounting. AMD had to cough up $340m to Global Foundries as part of its Wafer Supply Agreement with the chip fab giant, and it lost $61m on debt redemption – that's why it slammed into the red this quarter.

When comparing to AMD itself, they are having better numbers. So the news is good. But compare to intel and nvidia, of course the news is not good enough. But non the less AMD is doing better then past few quarters. If they can stay on this track where zen and rx490 are not total mess, they may really come to net profit. 

 

Thing I dont like is OP's source (not picking on OP). overclock3d should be a reputable source but it is very clear they just screen shot part of the figure (non-GAAP one) from another source to make their point. They didn't even include the source of the image they have. As a news report website, this behavior is very misleading and wrong ethic.

If we're simply comparing AMD - financially - to their competitors, we would have stopped paying attention 10 years ago.

 

We must compare AMD to themselves, financially, to see the context of how far they've come, and how close they are to reaching sustainable profitability again.
