RX 480 4GB vs GTX 1060 3GB

I voted the RX 480 because 3GB of VRAM is quickly becoming not that much.

Nvidia really put them selves in a weird situation with that 3GB 1060, it should've just had slightly less cuda cores than it already does & be called the 1050Ti, then give the 1050 even less.

If I'm able to get away with the 3gb on my card at 1440p, I dont think the 3gb on the 1060 would be a noticeable hindrance to performance at 1080p, but I would still lean towards the rx 480 for price

There are quite a few games that exceed 3GB at 1080p with the knobs turned up, which both cards's actual GPU is capable of, and that number is growing larger and larger.

Several AAA games already use over 4GB of vram even at 1080.

If you have a GPU like a 480 or better, which can easily do high/ultra at 1080p, you're gonna want that extra vram to prevent stuttering and frame drops.

 

If AAA games today are using over 4GB of vram, then 3 years from now they will use even more, and if you want to continue using the 480 or 1060 for that long then you really want more vram.

Unless you enjoy medium or low settings, then 3GB is perfectly fine.

Many triple A titles and some more graphically impressive indie games of the past few years can easily go past 3GB of VRAM, and given the RX 480 and GTX 1060 are more than equipped to drive these games at 1080 ultra (hell, even a 470 doesn't sweat doing this and it starts at 4GB as well), going with a card charging backwards for its price bracket makes no sense.

I would suggest the RX480 4GB since 3 GB VRAM is not enough. Nvidia really shot their foot this time for not wanting to undercut a portion of their sales of 6GB version and releasing such a product.

Long story short. 4GB of vRAM should be the minimum on any mid-range card (mid range being any card that handles 1080p high-ultra settings gaming at 60fps), so go with the RX 480 4GB (also, my GTX 970 frequently goes over 3GB of vRAM usage, at 1080p ultra settings).
