Any Downside To Upgrading To A GTX 1080?

Look at the launch performance compared to now, AMD's drivers always start out shit and get better over a period of a few years-the overhead doesn't help either (even back in the late 90's early 2000's the overhead was a problem). And the FuryX kicking the 980ti's ass? No, no it doesn't outside of a tech demo (Ashes of the sigularity) and a game that is well know to favour AMD's cards (Hitman):

Some I've seen are screen display not rendering properly. Blur text and fugly colours.  Usually happens when you do a cold boot.

 

Doesn't sound like a bug i haven't seen on AMD drivers. 

 

There are some AMD related errors in Terraria such as the living flame dye making whatever you put it on invisible. The background effect for the party and the slime falling from the sky plays extremely fast as well.

Displays fall asleep, then all three go to 640x480 duplicates when woken back up.

 

Turning off and on the left monitor (displayport) fixes it

Hmm, we're not on the same frequency here. That statement was in relation to what your acquaintance explained. Like parts of windows not rendering(For example). 

 

I do know that amd drivers bug out. But what i'm saying is that nvidia drivers bug out in ways different than AMD.

BTW, that article is 11 months old-as opposed 4 months old. The "latest" drivers in the WCCFTECH article are 7 months older and even further from being the latest.

If you have money... Then you don't have downsides at all... Only downside otherwise, would be your wallet.

GTX 1080 is 20% better than a 1070 but it costs 40 to 50% of it's price. At least in my country (1070 is around 500€ while 1080 is around 800€).

So if you want to go for a price/performance, then a 1070 is a solid choice, can give you 1080p and over 60 fps at ultra in most games and it's also good for 1440p 60 fps. 4 you would have to go for a Titan X Pascal if you want to play the most demanding games at 4k 60fps with high settings(not ultra, even Titan X Pascal has trouble with quite a few games).

if your doing 3 1080P monitors then I would go with the 1080.

 

1920x1080=2,073,600

2,560 x 1,440=3,686,400

1920x1080x3=6,220,800

3840x2160=8,294,400

 

3 1080p monitors are pretty close to the amount of pixels as 4k, and currently the 1080 does pretty well at 4k (might not hit 144fps at ultra though in AAA games)
