Serious question: Do you think there will ever be a Half Life 3?

I know everyone likes to joke about elaborate theories as to the confirmation of Half Life 3, but I just want to get actual answers from the gaming community: do you think that there will actually be a HL3? Or will Valve just not revisit the franchise?

 

After replaying HL2 and the Episodes twice over the last week and a half, I really, really need another installment in the franchise. It's just so perfect, so I'd love to believe that a third will come, but I wanted to hear what you think.

No, there wont be one because its litteraly imposible to live up to the hype. Valve should know this and makes better cash on never making one and have then comunity run around making jokes.

Yeah, there will be one at some point. It's too big of a franchise to not do it.

I feel like it will suffer a similar fate as Duke Nukem Forever's entire development though, with a lot of postponing the game and in the end not being good.

The main thing I see with half life is that it relied on things like physics innovation in the game to get entertainment value, since these things are now mostly mundane the game will lose its charm and honestly they weren't very entertaining to me anyway the first game dragged on too much and by the time the second game came out I had played better shooters.

Never say never, but I'm fairly convinced it's not in development right now. It's been hyped too much, Valve is probably scared to make it and end up with a duke nukem forever. Even if the game itself would be good, it could never be as good as people expect it to be.

 

And to be honest, the other two titles in the series probably weren't as good as they're hyped to be either. They were significant in the context of when they were released, but all things considered they were both what I would consider decent shooters, not exceptional in terms of gameplay or story (in hindsight). The shooting is not as good as in quake 1/2 or doom, the story is not as good as in, say, bioshock. It was somewhere inbetween and didn't have anything particularly terrible and it came out at the right time, that's it. HL3 would probably be criticized if it was exactly the same.

I wouldn't mind portal 3, so long as they don't try to reuse everything and just keep it simple and quirky

I love Portal a lot but I don't really want a Portal 3, simply because I don't think there's anywhere left to go with the Portal storyline. Chell escaped Aperture at the end of the second game, and there's not really anywhere you can go from there. You can't go back inside Aperture because that would feel like more of the same and like the series was getting repetitive, and you can't really go out and do other stuff because then people might not like it because it's too different. Chell's story has come to a natural close, reopening it again would feel a bit forced.

 

Conversely, Half-Life still has a TONNE of story left in it. There's the whole thing about the Borealis, what's hidden there, what the Combine plan to use it for, what happened to Judith Mossman, whether Gordon and Alyx even made it out of White Forest, etc. etc.

You mean the humans in that vault at the end of the co-op campaign? IIRC the story goes GLaDOS killed them all, but maybe we could play as one of them before GLaDOS killed them... but then one of the main reasons that the original iteration of Portal 2 was recieved so negatively by beta testers was because the player wasn't Chell so having the main character of Portal 3 not be Chell could cause problems.

Maybe someday, but not anytime soon.

I might get hate for this, but...

 

Source Engine as been developed into a very responsive small map multiplayer platform. It would take a lot of work to use it for singleplayer experience, that could match the competition these days, in the triple A first person shooter category and use the realistic aestheticstyle that older games used. It's also very unlikely Valve would make a game with any other engine.

I understand your hesitation, but I don't agree with conclusion. For example Portal Stories: Mel was great addition to Portal universe and it doesn't break the official storyline in anyway, even though it's mod. (http://store.steampowered.com/app/317400/)

 

Also another totally different path could be Portal VR.
