Battlefield 2142: Revive Project

The ten-year-old sci-fi shooter Battlefield 2142 is back, sort of, thanks to Battlefield 2142 Revive, a fan-made project that went into release just ahead of the weekend. It's free to download and play, and even though it isn't officially sanctioned, Electronic Arts so far seems content to let it slide.

As PCGamesN suggests, at least part of the reason for EA's good nature toward the project may be the fact that the original Battlefield 2142 is no longer playable. It fell victim to the Great Gamespy Shutdown of '14, and while EA originally said it was “working on transitioning [affected] games after the shutdown so you'll still be able to play them,” it changed its mind about a month later, owing to the “significant technical hurdles” involved in keeping them up.

So it's a win for EA in just about every possible way: The Battlefield franchise gets a little extra attention in the lead-up to Battlefield 1, someone else does all the heavy lifting, and EA gets credit for not stomping it out like a grass fire. And the revival is seeing some action, with server stats indicating a Monday afternoon concurrent player count in the high-300s. For the purposes of comparison, that wouldn't be enough to crack the top 100 on Steam, but it's pretty good for a fan revival of a dead FPS that—sorry, fans—was never what you'd call a runaway success in the first place.

Full details on Battlefield 2142 Revive, and the relevant download links, may be had at bl2142.co.

Well this is pretty cool, and hopefully EA doesn't axe it. I personal never played the game beyond the demo when I was younger, but the whole Titan game mode was pretty cool. Wish them the best of luck.

This was my favourite FPS of the time, i will try this out when i get home. loved the objective based, that you had to kill the titans and i never felt useless in any role or that there were to many upgrades and that the weapons always had an impact no matter which tier.

This, and Battlefield 2, are two amazing online FPS - though, they also have offline bot-matches, too. Revive is doing amazing work with these.

Revive apparently have permission from DICE to do what they're doing. Posted by the Revive team on their forums:

Joe has received an email in the past from dice that it is alright. As long as we say we are not affiliated with DICE and EA games.

You probably wont get the personal email, however as long as we made sure to have this copyright information displayed at all times, it was allowed.

THIS GETS MY ATTENTION. Much, much more. I poured thousands  of hours into bf2 because people actually worked together.

Inb4 EA shuts it down because no 1 is buying BF1 on PC due to the lack of a procon layer.

I have this feeling that BF1 will become more popular than its two predecessors. People have been asking for decent modern WW1/WW2 shooter for years. Modern warfare is long in the tooth.

Almost forgot this game. It was the brownest, greyest most boring looking game ever. Quickly forgotten.

Been playing it last day or 2.
It's hella buggy and laggy.
hard changing the FoV (there's no slider in game) makes the ADS sensitivity go wild.

still fun tho

I make bad life decisions.

Didn't know about BF2 revive before, thanks for the heads up.

Can finally get back in a BF game with good helicopter physics.

BF2142 never interested me though, tried it for 2 hours and concluded the setting and world design was made up in a minute. Vehicles especially scream "making it up as we go" (though not as bad as Quake Wars of course)

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.
