Ive heard discord is planning video but not yet, and I honestly dunno what else there is

Doesn't WhatsApp have video calling?

I've never used Discord so I can't comment there.

I use Skype every day. Never really had problem with it. Besides everyone I know uses it and it would be hard to move to something else... I can, but how do I convince others to move as well? It is not easy.

Me and my Friends used Skype for Video calls when playing games :) ( Round 10 people in call) This was when you had to have a premium account.

But we started having alot of problems after MS took over, Kept getting wierd lag and other random issues. Pity tbh was really good for Video.

We are now currently using Discord, Only use Whatsapp on mobile to speak to my other half lol

not. it mirrors your phone just like the web client, not a standalone pc client.

Skype is literally cancer, moved to hangouts a long time ago, although it being horse manure, never looked back

Having a standalone PC client is not really feasible. Your phone number is your user name (and used for verification) and because of the end-to-end encryption it is not possible to have it like Skype where you have one account that multiple clients can hook into and fetch data from.

When you connect your web/PC client to your phone for mirroring it actually sets up an additional E2EE link between your computer and phone.

I don't use video calls so I don't know.

Imagine how wonderful Skype could be if Microsoft just put in time and effort. There are a billion other clients which all have very big strengths that could be added to Skype, but Microsoft seems disinterested in making Skype better. It's just more data harvesting in the back-end.

Yeah I mean it does work, we use it for like multi user video sessions, like when we play GTA Online or Battlefield, we have skype on our second screens so we can hang out - do this every night, and for gaming with the gf etc

Its not even that far off being a good program, if they could make the quality better, the codec lighter, and have E2EE it would be fine - and batter text chat and some more customisation

its just only passable in functionality and design

As soon as Discord intoduces video chat, I'm switching everyone I know to it. The main issue is my (gran)parents, who are used to Skype.

But why?

Audio quality is one step below Discord and about 3 steps below a properly configured teamspeak server. The advertising isn't there. It's overly bloated for such a simple program. Discord has the easy-link web aspect, no application required. It's lacking some basic settings and permissions that even discord has. There's almost no reason to use Skype short of easy video chat.
