i5 6500 vs 6600

Hey guys!

The Core i5 6500(goes upto 3.60 GHz) and the Core i5 6600(goes upto 3.90 GHz) are both great processors.

But, for a budget build should I go for the cheaper one(6500)? I will save around 1500 bucks(25-30$).

Is the Core i5 6500 enough for gaming? Or should i spend the extra buck and get the 6600?

PS I've left overclocking out of the picture.

If you have something like a GTX 1060 or RX 480 class GPU and are going for 1080p gaming, even 6400 should suffice.

I'm planning to get the RX 480. With 16 GBs of DDR4 ram, which CPU do you recommend?

I've been through various sites and checked out their benchmarks, and the 6600 is the winner 10/10 times. But I'm doing a budget build, so I need to keep everything in mind!

6500 is enough. Don't know where you live but here, in the USA, the 6600 and the K differ only by $10 which I would say "get the K" but the Z-boards are very costly.

What's your build so far?

i5 6500 or i5 6600k.  i5 6600 just isn't worth it.  You can find an i5-6500 at Micro Center for $179, and an i5-6600k at Micro Center for $209.  Personally, I'd go with an i5-6600k.  Being a K-skew CPU, it is built to be overclocked and therefore built to be extremely reliable.  Plus, it will probably last longer due to its reliabilty and overclockability.

Hope this helps! :)

Sorry for the mess!  My laptop just went ROG!

What's your build so far?

Right now I've got a shitty DELL Inspiron 3542, which my dad picked up. It has a single RAM slot with 4GB of DDR3L(upgrading it to 8GB), 500GB HDD(upgrading it to a TB) and a Core 13(will not touch it). After the upgrades, hopefully I can get some work done with it.

For my build, I've chosen a few parts(suggestions would be nice):

  1. The processor will be a Skylake Core i5. Still haven't decided the model though. The 6600K(which I love very much is out of the picture for now). The fight persists between the 6500 and the 6600. But I am willing to look into the 6400 and the 6402P.
  2. The graphics card will be an aftermarket(if I find a cheap one) 8GB RX 480.
  3. For RAM, I'm going for 2x8GB of DDR4 RAM. This should suffice. I'm willing to go for any cheap but fast enough brand.
  4. I haven't decided on the motherboard, but I want an ATX type which supports Crossfire. This will allow me to add another RX 480 maybe a year or two down the line, when a single one can't handle the load. Also it will allow me to add more RAM sticks later on.

What do you think? I want the total to be under 1200$(including the monitor and all the other peripherals).

I'm planning to save money, plus overclocking is out of the picture. If I have some dough left over, I will definitely go for a better CPU.

the i5-6500 and i5-6400 have equal bang for the buck, but with that kind of a budget i'd definitely buy an i5-6500 :)

idk about the i5-6402P though
