Community Tech Tips

Figured we could start a megathread on various tech tips. If it goes well, I will routinely edit this OP by quoting your posts and putting them in categories.

Examples:

Thermal Paste

Thermal paste is very easy to remove with Brakleen. It dissolves it and turns it into a liquid, even 15 year old hardened paste.

Fans almost always blow air out of the motor side. They are also usually marked with arrows on the side of the frame.

On android, use hacker's keyboard. It emulates a desktop keyboard, and backspace correctly deletes quotes.

And you guys can comment below with more tech tips, and when I have the time, I can add them to the OP. I will just quote you and copy the quote to here, so you will get credit :D

Ctrl+C Ctrl+V

(It is really suprising how many people don't know this)

Also don't force things into slots they weren't designed to go into, like a 6+2 pcie connector into a 4+4 eps port.

If you have a lithium powered device (cell phone, tablet, laptop, etc) and you either do not plan on using it for a while, or you intend to always have it plugged in, drain the battery to 50% and remove it, running it off the charger only. Lithium batteries do not like being fully charged all the time, they are best stored at half charge or so.

Some hotkeys & tips to speed up every day tasks.

ctrl + shift + escape: open task manager

windows + e: open windows explorer

windows + d: go to desktop (minimize all)
ctrl + shift + v: paste stuff into the current format (font, size etc)

Some Chrome tips:
- Pin your tabs (right click on a tab and pin them) then use ctrl + a number key to navigate through them. This gets really useful if you pint Gmail to ctrl +1, Slack to ctrl +2, Google Calendar to ctrl +3, etc

- ctrl + tab: cycle through your tabs left to right

- ctrl + shift + tab: cycle through your tabs the other way round

You can right click on a YouTube video and there should be an option to loop the video. (no need for those 10h music reuploads)

You can also display some stats about the video (but that's for nerds :))

Press Alt F4 for free in game currency.

I actually managed to get someone on the opposing team to fall for that once.

MB is not the same as Mb.

MB = Megabyte

Mb = Megabit

1 MB = 8 Mb

If you think your internet speeds are slow, be sure to evaluate that you are comparing the right values with each other (for example, Speedtest.net by default uses Mb, while Steam by default uses MB)

Most GPU manufacturers are shit at applying thermal paste and apply dollops by ice cream scoop loads.

Repasting your GPUs with a rice grain amount of MX4 will make a significant improvement in temps.

This is also voids the warranty for a lot of manufacturers except for EVGA, and most gpus don't need new thermal paste unless they are a few years old.
