MSI 970 Gaming is "minimum" or a ASUS 970 Aura and if you get the 8350 you get a free 212 Evo equivalent cooler out of the box! But for gaming a i5 is the more compatible choice and will most likely give you better FPS unless the game is optimized to use 8-threads... If you play Arma or DayZ you most likely want the i5...

just to say, a 8350 clocked at 4.2Ghz vs a i5 6600k clocked at 4.2Ghz, the fx is faster when all the cores are used , 1-7 threads/cores utilised, the i5 is better (a text based review website did this not long ago...but I saw it being posted on my facebook feed so...no idea which site it was...)

I ran the stock cooler (the old one) on my 8350 while my h100 was coming. It's not loud and just about keeps it under tcase. I got very very hot and this was in a switch 810 which has plenty of air flow.

the i5-6500 is a much better performer overall, come on a much newer platform, with much better features (PCIe 3.0, DDR4 ram, NVME etc.) is much more energy efficient and has an upgrade path to an i7 in the future if you feel like it...FX has none  of this and locking you into a long outdated platform that didn't performed well from day 1 at this point in time would be a HUGE mistake.

My friend, who is selling me his 8350 has a hyper 212 Evo in his pc. We played games toghether and his Pc was SILENT, We have the same case. also temps were about 50-70 deegres on full load. I dont think that i want to have it max overclocked at 20 deegrees

even then the overall performance multi-threaded load between old ass AMD FX and brand new intel i5 is VERY similar...just look at LTT cinebench R15 multi-threaded results...

i5 intel skylake is on par to FX-8XXX in multi-threaded loads but slash it in anything that use less thread...and premiere pro doesnt use all thread while editing...only in final render...which will take about the same time on both chips...in gaming the i5 destroy the FX and in anytihng else other than predictable loads (rendering, transcoding) in which case they are similar.

i had that POS paired with a GTX 780 and the CPU was already chocking the graphics card in many games at 1080p.

 

the overall multi-threaded performance wasn't too bad...but the single-threaded performance was horrible.

if you have to go with AMD for some reason...get the FX-8320/8320E and overclock it yourself...they are all the same until you get to FX-8370/9370/9590 which are binned. but even then, overclocking a CPU with such low IPC will only have a slight benefit..so save your money and go cheap...or get an i5

like i said...for a cheap workstation the FX-8320/8320E you can grab for cheap with the board i linked and overclock it to say 4.2ghz without adding voltage and you'll be golden...that's a sub 200$ combo that will give you you're money's worth in multi-threaded loads.
