Why do phone carriers limit data?

So this is something I never really understood about phone carriers, why do they limit your data? Is it because they want to make more money by getting you to buy more data or is it something like to keep people off of the data only when they need to use it so it doesn't use up bandwidth on the towers? If more people used more data they would have to upgrade their equipment which means spending money which they don't want to do. Data literally costs nothing. The factors are electricity and hardware. After that $0. ISPs make multi billions of dollars per year

Except they let you have unlimited but super throttled data so I wouldn't really call that completely unlimited data.

Um yes. Why the fuck do you think the FCC is trying to get TV broadcasters to sell there spectrum to the wireless carriers. It doesnt help that ATT and Verizon buy spectrum and never use it. But yeah. Thats how it goes. Gotta have plenty of bandwidth to get downloads from those spy satellites.

Um, no. Because I've seen the service contracts and used the cell services in the military. They actually get less bandwidth on the lines than the regular consumers do.

That's not what @Donut417 is talking about. RF spectrum, the frequencies used to trasmit data through the air, is regulated into bands, like AM radio, FM radio, OTA TV, cellphone channels, satellite channels, and so on. A very large percentage (I'm not sure it's as high as 98%, but it's high)of the frequencies are legally restricted for use only by the US gov't on US soil. Lots of other frequencies aren't usable for things like cellphones because they are too high frequency and wouldn't get good range.

 

There is a finite limit on the spectrum that can be used in a single area, that has to be shared by all the people connected to a specific tower (and you also have overlap with other towers on the same frequencies). The carriers share a portion of the blame here, but not most of the blame. Usually towers are either connected directly to fiber internet (there are several ISPs whose main business is just running fiber to cell towers, including Lumos) or connected to another tower which has fiber via a very high speed microwave link (which is an example of a frequency that is not usable for cellphones but can be used in other ways). A single user or small group of users making large transfers can negatively affect the other users in the area, not because of the fiber or microwave backbone, but because of physical and legal limits on the spectrum available in a given area.

Verizon just sent out some sites here for bid to get 850 LTE up and running, its finally happening! :D IIRC, they want them DONE and running first of September (for the football games...) I doubt it will happen that quick, but can't hurt to be optimistic.

 

AFAIK, the delay was getting the kinks worked out of the new remote/hub site thing they have going on.

 

 

 

 

OP, until recently one issue was getting the towers connected back to the internet, but in the past few years everything has went to fiber so that is no longer a problem. Now the amount of spectrum is the "bottleneck", to resolve it ATT and Verizon have purchased a good chunk from the likes of Comcast and Time Warner to begin building out on which will be starting soon. Further more, Verizon will be getting rid of 850Mhz for voice once everyone's phone is on VOIP/VOLTE  calling, expected to be 2-3 years from now, to further expand the capacity they can push out over the air.
