Squeezed nearly every single dollar out of this build. Managed to get a 1440p monitor with 144hz refresh rate in there. If AMD had a better graphics card to take advantage of Freesync I would have chose that instead since the monitor has Freesync. (Possible team switch in the future for this lucky build owner :P)

For bonus points I stuck to a nearly all Black/White color theme including the Ram, GPU, Case, CPU Cooler, SSD, and even the Motherboard. For an Extra 50 bucks this system will look really awesome with an NZXT Hue +.

I wanted to build a true all-around PC, not skewed for gaming, but also keeping work and productivity in mind. That's why I built it around a (non-gaming, 60HZ) ultrawide 3440x1440p monitor. This setup will be great for all forms of productivity, while the rig will also allow for playing some MOBA/Overwatch style games in 1440p and all other games in solid 1080p. Work & play! The rig also comes in a mini-ATX form factor since I feel that most people won't appreciate a huge case on their desks.

Hi guys,

I'm new to the forum and I thought I'd give the challenge a go. Using PCPartpicker I've made a list of parts, the prices and the reasons why I picked it.

PCPartPicker part list: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/NTsL2R

CPU: Intel Core i5-6600K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($234.39 @ Amazon)

- I would have loved a i7-6700k but its to expensive and I was being practical, it's a good all rounder and still a good OC if you want to.

CPU Cooler: Scythe Mugen 4 79.0 CFM CPU Cooler  ($47.89 @ OutletPC)

- Great performer and quit. Only $10 more then the Cooler Master, worth it IMO.

Motherboard: Asus Z170-A ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  ($144.99 @ NCIX US)

- Gotta have USB 3.1 (gen2) Type C.  Next time you blink anything with a battery will need it.

Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory  ($77.88 @ OutletPC)

- Little is gained by spending more IMO. 2400Mhz, Cas 15 and it's pretty.

Storage: Samsung 950 PRO 256GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive  ($186.99 @ SuperBiiz)

- @ 2.200/900MB/s. That speed. Can't not have it.

Storage: Hitachi Deskstar 7K2000 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($65.82 @ Amazon)

- Because I also need a place to put my stuff, can't beat it for reliability.

Video Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1060 6GB G1 Gaming Video Card  ($289.00)

- It's fast and shiny and can't afford a 1070

Case: Phanteks ECLIPSE P400S ATX Mid Tower Case White ($87.89 @ Amazon)

- Sleek design, enough fan/radiator space, just a little bigger then the NZXT S340 and the shiny LEDS of course.

Power Supply: Corsair CXM 550W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply ($39.99 @ newegg after $20 rebate)

- It had to be 80 Plus Bronze at least, semi modular. Its a simple build, don't need all the cables. Reliable. At least 450 watt.

Monitor: BenQ XL2430T 24.0" 144Hz Monitor  ($350.98 @ Newegg)

- Good for gaming, but high refresh is nice for any user not just gamers. Bigger, G-Sync or fancier just puts things over the limit.

Keyboard: Razer Blackwidow Ultimate 2014 Wired Gaming Keyboard  ($89.72 @ Amazon)

- Good keyboard. Unless mechanical keyboards annoy you. Then no, not so much.

Mouse: Razer DeathAdder Chroma Wired Optical Mouse  ($60.99 @ Best Buy)

-Good mouse.

Wireless Network Adapter: Edimax EW-7811UTC USB 2.0 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi Adapter  ($15.99 @ Newegg)

- It was this or a 120 mm fan ...

Other: It's a Boy! Individually Wrapped Blue Bubble Gum Cigar Box - 36-Count ($0.99)

- And I shall name him: Walter.

Slick never said it had to be a gaming rig, so this is as balanced as my mind will go on building an allround rig.

Guess i'll go ahead and take a crack at this.  I chose to go small form factor with a mini itx board sporting the i5 6600, a water cooled fury x, and a 240 gig ssd, all enclosed in the Enthoo Evolv.  This build also has a 2TB hard drive for media storage and 16GBs of 2400mhz ram.  To round out the build i added a 1440p 144hz free sync monitor, a (mostly) full sized mechanical keyboard and a corsair m65 mouse.  As of creation the price, without mail in rebates and without in store pick up, sits just under $1,690

This took a little while. Here's my Megablocks kit. At exactly $1,698.49 I hope nothing is taxed lol.

http://pcpartpicker.com/list/DGsL2R

plus http://www.bestbuy.com/site/microsoft-xbox-360-wireless-controller-black/2589153.p?id=1218503724374&skuId=2589153

plus https://www.amazon.com/Programmable-Buttons-AFUNTA-double-speed-adjustment/dp/B016ZF77OA/ref=pd_sim_sbs_147_2?ie=UTF8&dpID=41Wxe2J1anL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&psc=1&refRID=39GKTKE76M07EYKAMSQN

The keyboard is only really there because it's necessary. I hope "all around good" doesn't include virtualization, Windows 10 pro wasn't worth the extra $$$. Good thing there are plenty of other options for remote desktop. You could think of this as a "semi-pro" editing station and gaming rig. Fractal design's website states that the Define Nano S comes with "an adapter included for motherboards with limited fan header" but wasn't very specific. They seem like a company that would include a splitter capable of running all the case fans off of one header. Worst case scenario is that this ends up being a few bucks over budget. The mouse includes macro buttons, because I personally need me some media keys. The fans, well, just think of them as a touch of social engineering :D No window or LEDs because, hell no.

So I this is the setup it’s not quite a gaming machine but it can play some games, and with the case, it would look almost at home at a desk at some no-name accounting firm. I also noticed everybody was running Intel, so had to do research and find a nice AMD based system.

AMD RX480 Master Race. Way better than a shoddy 1070.

Not to mention a G502, way better than any Razer poop. Feat 32GB of RAM, a Core i7 and a H100i.

here you go: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/H6Kq3F

as an all round build, gaming wasn't the only thing on my mind. as such: compact case + silent enough cooler, and only a 1060 compared to 1070/80. I feel in an all round build not more else is needed graphics wise since the games will have a tough job catching up to the 1060, let alone 1070/80.

plenty of power in the 6700k, 16gb of ram ensuring linus probably can't out-chrome this machine.

as for aesthetics, a dark toned black theme to match the all round rig meaning it'll look good in an office space, but you still have the option for chroma keyboard & g-card lights.

keyboard choice was made to be great for gaming (in my experience) while not too loud (again, for the "all round part") and monitor's 144hz rate and great colour means it'll look great in an office environment or pulling off sick 360 noscopes.

g502 cuz g502. couldn't find the spectrum version, but that's what I'm hinting at.

3tbs should be fine for storage, or you should be networking (the great teachings of linus media group), while the samsung 850 evo brings launch down to under 15 seconds in my experience.

added wind 10 in case (would prefer 7 but pcpartpicker says it's 200$) but if not needed tack this thing on:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-21-5-widescreen-led-monitor-black/3706202.p?id=1218428685591&skuId=3706202

it's an Asus VS228H, just as a side monitor for a productivity boost.

that should be about it. Hope you like my reasonings!

Explanation on my proposed "All-purpose PC Rig"

CPU: i5 6600K - I was at a dilemma of either picking the i7 6700 or the i5 6600K (note that both can be OC although different method), but after some consideration, I feel like it was a necessary sacrifice to fit in better parts (one of them being the monitor, but I'll explain later

CPU Cooler: 212 EVO - it's cheap, it does the work well so why not?

RAM: Kingston HyperX 16GB DDR4-2133 - I wasn't picky when it comes to RAM, so a black kit with a moderately well speed is enough

Motherboard: MSI Z170A SLI Plus - It's black, it has SLI, it has steel-armored PCI-E slot, it has Z170 chipset, it's considerably cheaper than most Z170 board while being aesthetically good

Storage: Samsung 850 EVO 250GB + Seagate Barracuda 2TB - I'm using this combo for my rig (lower capacity), they work like a wonder

GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 1070 Armor OC - Black and white goes super well with this build

Case: In-Win 503 Black - I'm using it currently, what can I say? A wonderful case at the $60 price point

GPU: EVGA G2 550W - Bandwagon but I think it's a good PSU based on Jonnyguru review and people's opinion

Monitor: Dell UltraSharp U2515H - even among other IPS panel monitors I doubt there is one that can rival this baby at $350, it's basically a 1440p version of the U2414H I'm also using with great color accuracy due to factory calibrated, InfinityEdge design (near bezeless), shit tons of ports (2 HDMIs, 1 miniDP, 2 DPs, 5 USB 3.0 ports), 100mm x 100mm VESA mount compatible for tilt, pivot, swivel. The only downside is the 60Hz refresh rate but for me (who isn't into competitive gaming) it doesn't really matter too much since the color its literally soothing my eyes wheneven I watch a movie with it, also an i5 and a 1070 should be sufficient for 60FPS high-to-ultra setting in most game at 1440p

Keyboard and Mouse: CoolerMaster Storm QuickFire + Logitech G303 -  like RAM kit, I wasn't going to be picky about this so a Cherry MX mechanical keyboard and a (considerably) cheap mouse will do the job well

In short: This PC doesn't one-sidedly aim at competitive gamer or Video/Photo Editors, this is an All-Purposed PC, this means gamers and people who do creativity works can use this PC well with no problem

The Quiet Subtle Red Build

@Slick Personally I get so annoyed when I'm across the room and I can hear noisy fans whining while the machine is just sitting there at idle. For that reason, my build had to had to at least have the ability to be quiet. Quiet case with some form of sound dampening and components that, unless under serious load, be somewhat quiet. Myself being a long time supporter of 'the red team' as far as that war goes, I had to go with AMD graphics and thought it would be nice to carry the 'red' theme throughout the build. Put Corsairs Red AF140 series fans on the front of the case to get a red glow when it's dark and couple those fans with the H110i to get some nice CPU temps or OC possibilities. Here's my compilation:

Case: Corsair Carbide 400Q ATX Mid Tower Case  ($99.99 @ Newegg)

Case Fan: Corsair Air Series AF140 Red 66.4 CFM  140mm Fan  ($12.88 @ OutletPC)
Case Fan: Corsair Air Series AF140 Red 66.4 CFM  140mm Fan  ($12.88 @ OutletPC)

Slick looking case, good mounting options for a rad and some decent red LED fans to give the front side a red hue in the dark through those vent holes.

Motherboard: Asus Z170-E ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  ($119.88 @ OutletPC)

"IT'S NOT THE Z170-A" blah blah. Who cares. This will support dual crossfire and has enough fan headers for the job. The Z170-A is 30 bucks more.

CPU: Intel Core i5-6600K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($237.79 @ OutletPC)
CPU Cooler: Corsair H110i GTX 104.7 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler  ($99.99 @ Newegg)

The i5 kicks serious butt and OCing will not be an issue with the H110i stuck on top. Bonus points, the H110i has a red LED logo option. Switch the fans for the red LED ones, tie it all into the red theme, et voilá.

Video Card: Sapphire Radeon RX 480 8GB Video Card (2-Way CrossFire)  ($269.99 @ B&H)
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon RX 480 8GB Video Card (2-Way CrossFire)  ($269.99 @ B&H)

We've all seen the benchmarks, need I say more? Oh yes, "Red" build, thus "Red team".

Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory  ($64.99 @ Newegg)

Yes, they have red heatsinks on them.

Storage: Samsung 850 Pro Series 256GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($124.99 @ B&H)
Storage: Samsung Spinpoint M8 1TB 2.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($54.50 @ Amazon)
Storage: Samsung Spinpoint M8 1TB 2.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($54.50 @ Amazon)
SSD boot drive, yes the motherboard supports M.2, but the budget does not. For some additional (low noise) storage, put two cheap-ish 1TB 5400rpm disks in RAID 1 and you bundle redundancy, low noise and decent speed into one. Plus in this case you can fit 3 of those 2.5" disks on the back of the motherboard tray. Out of sight, out of mind. Then we can also get rid of that stupid 3.5" drive cage and do some cable management behind the PSU.

Power Supply: Corsair RMx 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply  ($99.99 @ Newegg)

Solid power, good quality, 80+ Gold, fully modular. This'll do fine.

Monitor: Acer H226HQLbid 21.5" 60Hz Monitor  ($99.99 @ Newegg)

"OMG JUST 21.5 INCHES, SO LAME." Yes it's just 21.5 inches, but for 1 Benjamin Franklin you get a decent 1080p IPS display with sleek thin borders.

Keyboard: Logitech G105 Wired Gaming Keyboard  ($49.99 @ Best Buy)
Mouse: Logitech G302 Daedalus Prime Moba Wired Laser Mouse  ($30.99 @ Best Buy)

Budget choices, but I'd personally rather put my money into internal components than display it on my desk.

Other: Red SATA cables ($1.66)

This is a red build, after all. You can find these online for pennies with free shipping from China.

Not the best looking build, but I have a 1080 which will get 60 fps easily on any 1440p game. I have a good Seasonic PSU, A 6600k, that can be over clocked easily. Very good build for price.

My third build is very focused on looks and quality while maintaining a powerful CPU and GPU. Each part that I have in this build, I can recommend every part in this build. I have a G1 Gaming GTX 960 and it is so quiet. The case is very well built and good looking. The CPU can be overclocked very well with the H80i GT. Everything is almost perfect in this build.
