Your current power supply is pretty crap. What that means is that the moment you start using it hard, it will start giving you trouble. But the computer you have right now doesn't use a lot of power, so the PSU doesn't have to work hard. If you got a graphics card that used more power, the PSU would have to start working and its problems could arise

I think the issue here is how the 550watt uses the same cap as the 450watt from my memory which may be part of the HUT issue :P 

I'm suddenly very iPad I got a 450 since it's got the same bulk cap as the 550 xD

 

And it better perform because it's going to have to power a voltage unlocked RX 480

Hi all.

 

I've traded one of the CPUs, that I had for new PSU: Corsair HXi850. Is that a good one? Guess it's "second from the top" in the Corsair range: Corsair link to monitor power usage, platinum(makes sense for 24/7).

Planning to use it in dual xeon system. Not gaming rig, so 850W should be more then enough.

I've only have read some of Pavel's reviews at HWI, but the ones I have seem to have issues with protections (the Seasonic S12G 550w, Antec HCG-850, Cooler Master V650, and now this CX550M).

The problem is that many of these PSU's supervisor IC have the set off point of their UVP / OVP very far from specs in an event of a catastrophic failures. In this case, the CX550M had shut off when it had been overloaded and the voltage had reach below 9.6V which is within Weltrend WT7502's UVP range of 8.8~9.8V found in these CXMs. So it's working properly but not at an ideal figure. The PS223 that's used in quite a few Seasonic units also have a rather low range of 8.5~9.5V.

 

It seem that OPP was not properly tested because UVP had set off, while OCP on the 12V rail is not enabled as with most single rail PSUs. The reason why Aris' sample of the CX650M at Tom's had the OPP (a primary side protection) set off may be because of it being tested on a 115V while Pavel tested on 230V (higher input currents on the 115V).

 

But yes, the high Hold-Up of the CX650M was a result of the higher rated 470uF primary cap that's found in Aris' sample when it supposed to be 330uF.

That sounds like a good idea to me.  I'm not sure of any PSUs that are covered for longer than that.

I know the lower wattage G2s have a 5 or 7 year warranty, but all the NEX-G have a 10 year warranty.
