no, just bullshit.

550W is enough "Future Proof", more Watt doesn't give yo "more Future Proof" as nobody knows what Future will bring. And its unlikely anyway.

Thanks for the input. I've read some stuff online about graphics card headroom, where the 1080 Ti needs at least a 600w power supply. Is this true?

650w does have a place for high end CPU (Threadripper etc)

By and large no, perhaps with an overclocked 7980XE, but not on any gaming system. You'll be fine with 550W for an 8700K/2700X and 1080 Ti

Hello. I'm looking for a new power supply. I used to have a Seasonic M12ll 750w Bronze power supply but recently, the fan was rattling when I plugged in a new graphics card (Asus GTX 1080 Ti STRIX). It was ratting while I was playing GTA V and benchmarking with FurMark. I sent it back to the shop for warranty and they will give it to me within two to three weeks. I need a new power supply.

Anyways, here are my specs. Intel i7-8700 (I might upgrade to an 8086k), Asus GTX 1080 Ti STRIX, 2x8 16gb G.Skill Trident Z RGB RAM, Asus z370 STRIX-E motherboard, Noctua NH-D15, and a Silverstone Primera 01 RGB case (it comes with a fan hub and RGB controller). The case has four 140mm fans, three are RGB. ADATA XPG SX8200 249gb m.2 NVME SSD and 1TB Western Digital HDD 7200RPM

Thanks for the answers! I'm kinda iffy about Seasonic at this point.

It looks like Seasonic really has a big issue with these M12II units. My PSU (exactly the same as yours) died last Sunday, with the same symptoms as its fan becomes noisy and 12V rail dropped to ~10V without load. When was your PSU manufactured (you can tell that by looking at the first 4 SN digits)?

If I'm correct the Hong Hua fans they use are not known for much consistency, so there can probably be a batch of semi-ok fans, a batch of meh fans, a batch of good fans. But I'd be hard-pressed to say they have a large issue with the M12ii units, most people who own them I reckon have no problems at all until after maybe 4-5 years of usage. Also, noisiness of a fan is not necessarily a product defect (though I'm not sure about rattling), it could simply be a noisy fan, and I believe the M12ii does have a loud fan, so that's something that would be good to research prior to purchasing the PSU. Most people won't experience loud noise if they're running at a lighter load, plus some people don't care much about noise as is, so you have a whole plethora of perspectives.

Thank you! I am now considering getting one of the PSUs listed at Tier 1 , but I am not sure which one to pick aside from the be quiet Straight Power 11 and Corsair ones. Generally, I am looking for a power supply that is of good quality, fully modular, and has a good number of years for warranty. Thanks again for all the replies!

No, not really.

The 1080ti needs around 250-300W, with CPU and stuff, a good quality 550W is more than enough.

Usually the 650W are the most useless units there are....

Especially the Straight Power E11 has the 2nd CPU Connector starting with the 750W, so 650W makes no sense...

Some say a 600w is preferable for OC 1080TI or Vega due to their large transient spikes (50A+ IIRC).

Thanks! Right now, I am choosing between the RMx and RMi. From what I have read, both PSUs have semi-fanless operation but it is possible to set a fixed RPM on the RMi. While the idea of semi-fanless seems nice, I think I'm more comfortable with a fan that spins all the time. I don't know if passive cooling is effective on PSUs. Thanks again! I'll purchase one tomorrow :D

Thanks for replying! I decided to go for the HX750w power supply since it costs just the same as the RMi and I wanted to go for Platinum for peace of mind.

With regards to connecting the power supply to the Asus GTX 1080 Ti, should I use two separate PCI-E cables or just use one? Each cable has two connector. Seasonic instructs people to use two separate cables for powerful cards so Im not sure about Corsair

It doesn't really matter. I always use two just to be safe but you can use 1 to make cable management easier if you want, then again I have custom cables so y'know. BTW, do at least pick up some UpHere extensions, it really does make the PC look so much better

Yep! I am considering getting some cable extensions. I have a 20% CableMod voucher from my Asus motherboard. I can't wait to use it. Thank you so much for helping! :D

Hey guys,

These are my list of components I plan on buying for my build.  Note that the motherboard and PSU choice is incorrect as PC partpicker has limited options.

The motherboard I'm aiming for is the MSI B450 Gaming Carbon Pro and the PSU is the Seasonic PRIME Ultra 550W.

What do you make of my PSU? Do you think it's the perfect choice for my build?

WAY overkill.

Just get a RM550x, those are near silent.

Okay so I've checked newegg there are two versions of it.

  1. RMx for $139.99 Canadian
  2. RMx (2018) for $119.99 Canadian

What's the difference between the two and which one should I go for?

New design is easier to assemble as it uses fewer wires, also, the 750/850w variants are more compact and the 750w gained a PCIe cable. Other than that they will be similar/the same for the average consumer...

Yep.  Went from a wired (wires from main PCB to modular PCB) to a wireless design.

You might be thinking of the differences between the fan in the RMx and the fan in the RMi.

How about Enermax MaxTytan and Platimax D.F.? On what tier is that power supply

Also, FSP Hydro PTM (Platinum), Hydro GE, Hydro GD, Hydro X (Gold) and Hydro Hydro Bronze, Hydro MX, Hexa 85+ (Bronze).
On what tier is that power supply?
