If I had the gear and knowledge to do so, I would buy a bunch of >$30 PSUs and test them. Logisys would be my priority.

Yes. The tier only accommodates current generation PSUs, the TX/TX-M 80plus Bronze and White series have been discontiuned for quite some time, the TX-M Gold Series is the current rendition

Has the quality of the PSUs in pre-built desktops improved much (I would assume yes) in more recent years, in general? And by how much? Don't think I've ever seen the cheapo pre-built units tested before to see how good they are. Just a thought...

You mean like well-known brands in the same category (like two 300w PSUs?).  

I think the prebuilts fall somewhere in the middle.  They're not designed for super high end cards, but they won't be as likely to burn a house down, or go out in a blaze of glory.  Think about all the lawsuits against Dell/HP if they were all fire hazards.  They have to be fit for businesses at least.

No name ones brands like Pryon use the absolute worst possible garbage, would never recommend.

 

I haven't really touched a newer branded consumer pre-built. I know around 2009-2010, HP and Dell both used these quite meh Bestec's in both their consumer and business machines (Not that I have seen any dead out of the ~20 computers from that period I have used at work, only seen 2 dead AcBells, one of which killed a motherboard, (IIRC, but I know they're from the HP DX6120ST and they were the ones with a green ADDA sticker on the fan, ones with the white delta sticker were fine)).

 

Nowadays, I think pre-builts mostly use good Delta, Lite-On and AcBel units.

You should define 'Prebuilt-PC' first.

By a big, multinational company? 

Then the answer is -> not really/that much. Depending on the series. In the lower end they just kicked the +3,3V and +5V out of the PSU.

Yes, PSU are a bit more efficient and always come with aPFC but from a component choice point of view there isn't that much different to - lets say 10 Years ago.

And yes, those PSU alway were decent/OKish/nothing special and always manufactured by highly regarded companys like Delta, Liteon, HiPro and so on.

 

If you mean by some Internet seller/shop or garage company:
Depends. Some still use the same garbage they did a couple of years ago, though it is illegal in some countrys to do that (PSU of prebuilt systems has to be somewhat like 80plus bronze in some regions). They still sell the same garbage, they don't want PSU that last longer.

And from what I've heard, they want PSU that kill the PC after the warranty period so they can sell more of that stuff.

 

 

So buttom line is:
Depends on who you are talking about.

If you are talking about Dell/Alienware, HP, Lenovo then the answer is No, not really.

They always used the bare minimum named brand components they do now for their budget systems as they did 10 years ago. For their higher end system they use the same amazing PSU (like Antec Signature, HCP-1200W and ohter Dual PCB ones) as they did in the olden days.

 

If you are talking about other companys the answer is maybe.

Some companys could be persuaded to use better quality units, some companys still use the same shit that's called the same name as 10 years ago. 

That's the reason why you see 'running changes' in some PSU like Thermaltakes Germany series wich came from HEC, Sirfa and now CWT...

Or other manufacturers that didn't seem to have changed the numbering at all.

I'd personally get whichever is cheaper and you can get a 550G3 for like 64 bucks after a rebate but I can understand somebody not wanting to deal with rebate pain.

I don't. I can understand if you don't have the money up front (although, it's generally like a $15 difference, which is basically nothing), but even if you manage to fuck up the rebate, then you can just call support and work it out. I accidentally submitted my order and not my invoice when I sent in the rebate for something I bought from Newegg and the rebate was declined. I contacted Newegg Live Chat and within about ten minutes they just refunded the rebate amount to my CC.
