Truck runs over crowd in Nice, France (gunfire later)

So, I think it's Bastille day today, and there were celebrations all over France.

 

A truck decided to drive a few miles over a crowd on one of the main promenades in Nice, with witnesses confirming hearing gunshots later.

I think it's horrifying, and my thoughts are with France.

EDIT1:

Dutch witness confirms gunfire. Mentions the white lorry suddenly appearing and stoppi ng 20m in front of him, starting to shoot afterwards, at which point he started running.

  

 

EDIT2:

French news mentions only a SINGLE neutralized person, and whether it's an act of terrorism or an action of a single unhinged person is still up to debate.

 

EDIT3:

Death toll has risen to 73. Witnesses say truck was zigzagging through the crowd, so there's no doubt about "intent to kill".

CNN offering context:

The promenade has two tiers: A street, and a beach at a lower level. Beach was closed off for fireworks.

Police quickly advised people to run onto the beach because of the truck zigzagging.

Thought there's no confirmation from official sources, Daesh (otherwise known as the Islamic State) claims responsibility for this act.

(a bit off topic, but as far as I'm aware, Daesh is the more demeaning name for them, as IS gives them somewhat of a more legal/recognized status. Dunno how true that is.)

So everyone is too busy making new laws to stop piracy and stop people from looking at inappropriate things on the internet yet they fail to stop simple attacks. They have all the spy equipment ever to know everything about you yet they always somehow never stop attacks. Good on you government/military you failed again

Being France I would've assumed that they had an large security presence in the area. How did a truck get through when roads are supposedly blocked off during public events like this?

Statements differ, but reports say it had arrived with bullet holes in the windshield, so I assume the police had already been trying to stop it before it started its massacre.

Well good job on the safety side guys...

 

I really hate the security measures they took after the terrorist attacks and since then i left the house twice, and both times the security measures really frustrated me because it completely ruined my experience, you could sense and to a certain extent see the fear being everywhere, and now this happens...

 

Clearly a sign the measures failed guys! It's very sad this happened but this is a clear sign whatever they did security wise failed.

 

Maybe if they didn't took those security measures the idiot or idiots (don't know with how many they were) didn't use a damn truck to attack and maybe didn't cause so many casualties...

 

I think this might be once flippin again one or more security measures taken after a terrible event causing even more casualties instead of solving it so it doesn't happen again.

I'm avoiding Brussels in general and staying inside for the 21 festivities... (Though to be fair, it was not that I was planning on going the 21st anywhere anyway)

Well if you want to stop such big thing i would shoot the tyres tbh...

If the driver dies when the truck is driving at speed it would take a while before such monster stops unless it hits a wall or a tree but even then it's a flippin truck.

Well one of the events was in brussels expo and the other one was in the expo in ghent.

Both inside and the thing was, when i went to event in ghent, you couldn't take your backpack with you.

Thing is, you could buy backpacks at the event and flippin swords so i don't know what the point of the security stuff was...

 

Any terrorist, even people that aren't an adult and aren't allowed to buy one could get one and start a massacre with it.

 

I'm also trying to avoid crowded places btw, i don't like being outside but that's just a personal thing probably.

I think you underestimate just how hard it is to start a massacre with an unsharpened blade. He'd get mobbed real fast. Doesn't Ghent expo have metal detectors at the entrance though? I vaguely remember something along the lines when I went to Facts a few years back.

Well tbh and probably being a bit devil's advocate the fact there are so many safety/security measures taken after the attack in paris showed the world that they are afraid. If they weren't they wouldn't feel the need to jack up the security in the first place... Thing is that more security measures aren't always a good idea.

 

More does NOT equal better, and history proved this multiple times.

 

A recent example is one from planes, years ago a terrorist managed to get into a cockpit and caused a plane to crash.

It was always possible to open the door from the outside.

Security measure taken -> cockpit can be locked and it became impossible to unlock the door to the cockpit from the outside.

 

Years later an idiot pilot locks himself up in the cockpit and crashes a plane. The only reason that was possible is because a security measure taken from a previous terrible event.

 

See where i'm going? If France didn't change anything security wise maybe the terrorist wouldn't use a damn truck to attack but just a gun and on foot, possibly causing less casualties.

I don't think they have metal detectors... I also went to facts a couple of times the last few years, including the first facts during spring and i haven't seen metal detectors.

I do think the security guys that are there now have a little device to check you since the attack in paris, and afaik you can get sharpened blades. A friend of me got one and it was quite sharp suprisingly. Maybe they changed it recently, don't know.

The only way to stop this is to make an example of ISIS, though bloodshed may only create more bloodshed there is no alternative I can see, so we can only hope their complete destruction has a net benefit since their evil cannot go unpunished.

RIP to the victims of the attack.

 

I'm just curious, why would a person drive a truck loaded with arms and grenade through a crowd? I'm watching the live news on Al Jazeera and they say there was only 1 perpetrator.

I've learned to stop trying to make sense of idiots. They probably thought they could get at a position in the crowd to detonate the explosives for the greatest effect.

Report says that the truck managed to drive almost 2 km along the boulevard before the driver was shot to death. And it was driving in zig zag. Sick bastard.
