Will my gtx1070 bottleneck the i5-6600K?

Not my topic, it's xlee's. I agree, his rig is good, and he'll have a good experience, and I helped him to get the best experience possible.  However, when Don was responding, it was about have the BEST experience possible, which is with an i7.  Not that his experience won't be good, but that it could possibly be better in some instances.  I'm sure @xLee will be great, and enjoy his new pc. That still doesn't invalidate the fact that it could be a little better. I understand that you are correct in saying he will only see these instances in extreme circumstances, but when you're trying to run 144hz those come up a little more often. I discussed the ways to mitigate that with xlee in the cases it shows up, and so I have no doubt he'll have a great time with the i5.  But the cases exist where there is stuttering from running out of cpu. I have an i7, and I'll be getting a 1070 in the mail today, so no jealousy on this front.

As stated in the title, will my gtx1070 bottleneck the i5-6600K?

More of a case of the 'i5 6600K bottlenecking the GTX 1070'. Short answer, it may in certain scenarios but it won't be severe. It's a good pairing.

So I shouldn't be considering to change it up to an i7-6700 right? The i5-6600k is absolutely fine here?

No, games won't need the hyperthreading of the i7. The i5 is fine. Plus, you can always overclock it given it's a K-series CPU.

you will be absolutely NOT bottlenecked by a 6600k. NO way shape or form will this happen.

If you OC it will be minor. If you don't OC it will be a major bottleneck.

i5s have begun to reach their limits. Take a look.

Well, unfortunately, my i5-6600k is already on the way.. Guess I should've gone for an i7 after all.

Then you really need an OC. Else there is no point in a 1070.

Is overclocking my i5 to 4.5 GHz safe? Since many people overclock it to that limit. Or does this depend from computer to computer.

Each chip is different. You may be able to get 5GHz or you may not even hit 4GHz - silicon lottery.

That's lowest FPS, not average.

Yes, there will be more frame dips in games that can utilize the i7s threads, but the average FPS between a Skylake i7 & a Skylake i5 won't be noticeable.

OP, don't worry about it.

Oh yes it is - minimums mean drops and that means stutter - if OP is playing at 120Hz then those drops will ruin his enjoyment - it also means the CPU is getting maxed before the GPU and thus bottlenecking occurs

I suggest watching digital foundries video on the i5 vs i7.  Especially in Far Cry 4, gta V, and the witcher 3 there are notable differences in the averages.

But what are the core reasons for cpu's that can't reach high OC potentials. Is it the because the cpu heats up too much?

As I said - silicon lottery. It could be anything from a crap PSU to voltage leakage.

I will indeed mention, that I'm sitting on a 1080p 144hz monitor.

This isn't about stuttering, this is about bottlenecks. There will always be a bottleneck, but you claim there will be a major one with a 6600K. That's not true at all.

It will be small, but not enough to even CONSIDER upgrading.

Oh it's not small at all - 20fps lower minimums than an i7? That is MASSIVE - that's 20% less than it should be

In that case you will certainly notice the frame drops with an i5 and may even notice stuttering.

You keep doing this.

Running a 1070 at 1080p is half retarded already. The higher the resolution, the less of a bottleneck.

While this is generally true, from everything I've seen about it Skylake has been a very consistent overclocker.  I haven't seen anybody not be able to hit 4.5

There are a few chips that top out at 4.2 but generally 4.3 is the average.
