It is both a product and a test. For now it is assisted driving, and it works just fine for that purpose. What it does NOT do is drive completely by itself. Since this has been very clear from the start and nobody has been forced to buy it I don't see the problem. It's just the same as when people paid for their oculus dk and when people buy early access games.

At least here in NW Ohio that's like a good 5 seconds of straight up doing nothing in order to pass 20 of those on the expressway. 

 

Let alone while you're hitting them with a decreased acceleration. So it's probably more like 7-10 seconds total.

 

Clearly this person was not operating it appropriately.

but where was the driver when it hit the trailer? obviously he/she did not see it either. Nobody is claiming it is perfect, again its just an assistance, and people need to treat it as such (which is on Tesla for improper/insufficient marketing/warning). I hope pedestrians never get hit, and i'm not saying its not possible, but since autopilot doesn't handle stop signs or traffic signals, i don't know what situations a car would encounter pedestrians where its feasible to have autopilot on.

 

also btw its "the question is when, not if, ____". what you said (how long, when) are the same thing xD, just letting you know for future use.

 Agreed, i would imagine one would remain focused and ready to make corrections by default, life is precious and the system is man made and in its infancy as far as cars go .

Tesla should REALLY change the name from "auto pilot" to "cruise control" or something. Auto-pilot makes people think it can drive itself perfectly without problem, this is NOT the case. It is just a more advanced form of cruise control.
To me, this is just another reckless driver making terrible and irresponsible driving decisions.

Planes have a little more margin forever, you can feel a plane going down or leaning or something, but a car crash can be like BAAAM!!! in a millisecond

I'm not surprised though, if you look into it - the driver was prompted to put their hands ON the wheel. Continuously, they didn't; technology is never flawless and if you want to juggle with your life and take your hands off the wheel in any vehicle then that's your doing when it goes wrong. Unfortunately, it appears loads of people think the Tesla Auto-Pilot is faultless, no - it has it's limits and it asks you to take over when it can't cope, when you don't take over it will go wrong and it will crash without human input.

 

I agree with Tesla keeping logs of these things, especially where it knows you have no hands on the wheel because the only person at fault in that case is the driver. One day it may be a potentially crash-free system but until every car is automated and drives itself human factors will always be a problem :-(

 

Don't really agree with some of the media blaming Tesla/shining a bad light when Tesla admitted they are kind of glad it's being taken seriously by the Media although probably a bit too far

Those are completely different situations.  First of all, and probably most importantly, on an aircraft there are 2 highly trained pilots ready to take over at a moment's notice.  The idiots who sleep behind the wheel in their Tesla could not be further from that.  Second, who's not "allowing" AP vehicles?  Clearly they're allowed or it would have been shut down by now.  Furthermore, I'd love to see some actual autonomous cars, especially since it would show people what a piece of crap AP is by comparison.  Oh wait, we already have some.  They're made by Google.

Well if you look into the google car it is far from perfect too. People say it only had one accident when someone else hit it. It has actually had a lot more but Google tried to hide them and cover them up

Well if you can find a link to these other at-fault accidents that's be great because to the best of my knowledge, there's only been one.  Yeah there's been plenty of other people crashing into the google cars, but only 1 google car crashing into something else afaik.  And yes, it's not perfect either, but it's a hell of a lot better than AP as far as I can tell.

Also AP is integrated into a car and doesn't have a giant scanning sensor on top.

That's one of the differences.  Tesla is making a production vehicle and trying to dress it up with some features.  Google is making an autonomous car, appearances be damned
