Another tesla auto pilot crash

"Both 2 people in the car survived. It was late at night, Autopilot did not detect a wood stake on the road, hit more than 20 wood stakes, tire on front passenger side and lights flew away. The speed limit is 55, he was driving 60 on autopilot. His car is completely destroyed. The place he had the accident does not have cellphone signal, it is 100 miles from the hotel.

Just got more photos from the driver. The car was in autopilot at speeds between 56-60, the car drove off the road hit the guard rail wood posts. I questioned him how can AP drove off the road himself, he said he also want to find out."

 

 

It seems like the person in question was in a remote location with probably pretty bad roads which is one possible explanation why autopilot failed. Its a good thing that nobody was killed or seriously injured. I'm thinking that tesla should implement a feature where AP turns off in places with bad roads.

 

update: 

The tesla was on an undivided mountain road after midnight with AP enabled. Pressure data from the wheel suggests that the driver's hands were not on the steering wheel. The vehicle alerted the driver to put his hands on the wheel but he did not do so and then the vehicle collided with a road post. The reason given by the driver is that the warning was in English but apparently the driver did not know English; he only knows Chinese mandarin. Autopilot is best used on highways with a center divider and they advise against its use on undivided roads at high speeds. Elon Musk states that he has no intentions to disable autopilot and that they "don't mind taking the heat for consumer safety."

Honestly, if a road is bad, and it was not a clear day with minimal traffic, I would not trust a fledgling autopilot system on a car.

Again what was the dude doing. You are suppose to be able to take control at a moments notice and be looking ahead for things. Driver error

I think people should think before they put autopilot on. While it is partially Tesla's fault, people should understand that they should still be in control of the car instead of letting go and not paying attention.

Well autopilot isnt free you need to pay 17k or so dollars to get the systems required for AP installed so sort of a waste if you dont use it

I would usually reserve judgement until Tesla has enough time to review the data, but my guess is that he should have been less focused on mackin' on his girlfriend and more focused on the road. /s

*puts on tin-foil hat* I also think that there are going to be a lot more reports of incidents like this coming out over the next year because people are going to start using autopilot failure as an excuse for their stupid decisions or crappy driving skills. A lonely highway "100 miles" from the hotel with a couple people driving in a Tesla? Yeah, he was probably driving like an idiot and lost control of the car.

IF this is really the result of using autopilot, this is a prime example of why I have no interest in autopilot cars at this point. They require that you still maintain all your focus on the road and be prepared to take control of the car at a moment's notice, so obviously you can't do something else while driving. If I have to still act like I'm physically driving, then I would rather be physically driving and enjoy the experience. Once AI autopilot programs get advanced enough that I can read the paper while commuting to work, then I'll be interested.

The thing is, there actually are autonomous cars, and they're already fantastic, and will only get better with time.  This, however, isn't one of them, and yet, it seems to garner the most attention.  I think that's a real shame because people are going to start associating AutoPilot and all of its failures with autonomous vehicles as a whole, and get a false impression that we're 10 years behind where we really are.

A lot of people are quick to blame the driver but AP is designed to beep at you when it is not sure where the road is and i dont think it did in this instance. And when driving normally AP tends to drift close to the line then corrects itself, drifts close to the line and then corrects itself. So in this case the driver might be expecting AP to follow the same pattern and correct itself but it didnt

Aaaaaaaaaand..... If he had followed instructions when engaging autopilot he would have been paying attention to the road and still had his hands on the wheel so that he could correct the car when it didn't make the correction itself. I'll put $10 on the driver being a dumbass and not paying attention like he should have.

we dont know how quickly it happened and if its late at night his reflexes are probably not as sharp

True.  If you're actively driving, you'll react to things a lot better than if you're half zoned out and just waiting to react to the autopilot messing up all of a sudden.

He still should have been in control and noticed it drifting and corrected it. If he didn't have time assuming he wasn't on his phone or distracted, he was going too fast

ever since Tesla announced public availability of the AP, I was against it - you wither have 100% robots on the road, or you have none

they're consciously killing people - it's not even a matter of when since it already happened

 

this tech needs to advance, but should not do so gambling's innocent people's lives who didn't even consent having the fucking things on the road
