My Sandy Bridge-E i7 3970X @ 5.12 GHz:

gsgsgh.thumb.PNG.b6a58e53efd299b26095484950280153.PNG

Not too bad for a 6 year old cpu...

I would like to push higher (I've booted 5.2+ GHz with higher Vcore), but this is the max Vcore my P9X79 can deliver under heavy load for 6 cores & HT. The PC shuts down when I start Cinebench with higher Vcore, so I think the current limit must be tripped...

Also the 8 sticks of mixed DDR3 is not ideal for benchmarks, but they can still do 2133 MHz @ CL9 at least.

CPU: Intel i7 3970X @ 4.7 GHz  (custom loop)   RAM: Kingston 1866 MHz 32GB DDR3   GPU(s): 2x Gigabyte R9 290OC (custom loop)   Motherboard: Asus P9X79

That shit is hilarious.

Skip some steps or you're going to need a gallon of thermal paste.  You almost need to apply it with a paint roller since the IHS is the size of a football field.  xD

yeah i bought it and didnt really think about the cooler tbh :P i got 2 tubes of ceramquie 2 that are about 30g or something to waste on it atm. the best thing is i can pick the board up by the heatsink even though it isnt attached to it in any way.

I'm like: "Look, my 2012 setup does OK in cinebench... 652pts !"

And then, thread Ripper dudes are like: "look I've got 92 gazillion points on Cinebench... What am I doing wrong? My CPU must be bad!"

:P

More seriously... My switch from 1600 RAM with 9-9-9-24 timings to 1866 RAM with 9-10-9-27 timings reduced my score in CB by a dozen points...

I switched back to the 1600 RAM and got consistent scores at around 652pts, and then back to the 1866, again around 640pts...

I wonder if I am missing something here. My old setup was using 4 x 4Gb sticks and now I am using 2 x 8Gb sticks as many people on this forum told me that 2 sticks would be easier on the memory controller than 4. Is there any truth to this?

(BTW, I checked several times and I am running in dual channel on slot 1 and 2)

If it has been done before, I can do it...

If it has never been done, just leave me some time to find a way!

Never mind! I just found the culprit! My RAM was under-volted because of the shitty/never updated BIOS from Gigabyte... I had to manually set the RAMs voltage to the right value (1,65V if I am not mistaken... Did a lot tonight!) because they would not use the values listed in XMP like it did with the 1600 RAM.

I will send an Email to them as some settings are wrong in this board's BIOS... Such as tRc timing not listing 260ns had to leave it at 300ns.

I ran 1 C.B. and got 691 and my 6 next tests gave me 672... I say it is consistent across the board! I have no idea though why the first test was 19 points higher... maybe some background app running.

THIS IS A COLLAGE... I did a screencap during the test to show-off speed and temp under load and then pasted the C.B. result over the first Screenshot.

I know it is not the way but my system cools down so fast that if I wait after the end of the test to make the screencap, everything is at lower MHz and temps (I use the CPU governor modes, called "AMD cool and quiet" to lower power when under low loads)

I always lock fans to 100% with C.B. just in case. CPU temp maxed-out at 40*C at 4,3GHz on all 8 cores. Too bad I did not get a screenshot at that 691pts result :P

Single - you already know that story.

You know, 171 in single threaded might be the highest I've seen an AMD CPU without extreme cooling. It's still not great, but at least it isn't awful.

My piece of donkeypoop secondary system, primary is too good to put into here.

Once i get new PSU im able to push 4.8, current psu causes just too much instability at anything above 4.5Ghz, dropping down to 11.3v@12v-line with 4.8Ghz@1.475v
