The 960 did not do that, nor did the 750 Ti unless you look at the Asus designed boards. That's Asus' fault.

i didnt say it did. and yes you have to include asus ones as they do have gtx960 gpus on them.

Also, just because the power goes from the PSU to the PCIe slots without being regulated by the motherboard (source on that?) doesn't mean there will be 0% risk of it breaking something. In fact, the person working in the motherboard industry that Ryan talked to said that sustained loads at the level they were measuring would likely cause damage.

Nope, he is wrong. Just flat out wrong. The guy working for OcUK is one or more of these things:

1) Another person who does not understand how the read the data published at Tom's Hardware.

2) Someone who does not understand the difference (and importance) of spikes vs sustained loads.

3) Willfully ignorant and just posts whatever he thinks will sell them the most cards.

 

My guess is a mix of number 1 and number 3.

Doesn't matter. It was an Asus designed board that didn't follow the Nvidia reference design and went off on their own, but used the GPU. It's not the same thing.

 

The RX 480 is a reference design coming straight from AMD. What the 480 is doing is literally worse.

The five +12v pins on the pci-e connector are connected to an internal power plane in the board that can handle loads of 20-30amps. The pins on the slot are rated for 1.1 amps each, and the RX480 draws 1.5 amps per pin. This isn't enough to cause problems.
