So... Ryan Shrout of PCPer just spilled the beans, that the $199 RX480 4GB reference cards in the shop,

have actually still 8GB of VRAM soldered on the PCB, and the reviewers were provided with a vBIOS to change between 8GB and 4GB for reviews - this opens a lot of possibilities.

 

So pretty much shader unlocking on Hawaii, Tonga, Fiji is just the tip of the iceberg - now you can actually DowanloadMoreRAM.com for your Polaris cards, of course provided we get lucky enough they don't do some sneaky stuff to dump the memory chips...

From what I understood, the REVIEW samples were all 8gb and they were given a special bios to make it 4gb. That won't be the case with actual retail samples -- it was just so reviewers could benchmark both 4gb and 8gb versions without having to be given both cards.

Retail cards will be 4GB or 8GB.

 

They aren't going to put 8GB on all cards and lock half of it away. All it takes is a BIOS flash and you've an 8GB card for the price of the 4GB card. 

 

AMD aren't stupid. The 6950 core unlocking was hilarious but they aren't going to repeat it like this.

From what I understood, the REVIEW samples were all 8gb and they were give a special bios to make it 4gb. I didn't take that to mean all 4gb variants will also have 8gb of VRAM -- 4 of which is locked away. 

It's the same difference, unless they have intentions on selling/producing significantly more 8gig models than 4gig, either way wasting the 4gigs of ram is not beneficial to their costs, if they actually did this for retail cards then I'm not confident in their management's intelligence.

what I understand from Ryan is that they indeed have 8GB on the retail cards as well, which he reasoned as saving on QA and development to make it easier if it's all the same PCB

the vBIOS was given only to the reviewers and technically customers shouldn't have it, but if someone was running a some kind of graphics processing unit database of some sorts that also published stuff like all the different vBIOSes then oh... I don't know... someone could just take and flash it )))

 

so... for anyone considering RX480 I'd advise you go for the 4GB, test your luck and if it doesn't unlock - return it for an exchange to 8GB model and tell us about it,

if it however does unlock then also tell us about it, and to be a bigger troll still return it - so some random casual would be posting some crazy stuff on reddit and we all get a laugh out of it ))))

nobody's saying they're stupid, all I'm saying is that we still get Hawaii unlocks from time to time as well as people have mastered the Tonga and Fiji unlocking pretty well at this time

GDDR5 isn't exactly expensive, but I don't think all retail cards will have 8gb of vRAM, I think it's just the review samples. And there is the advantage that you gain a marketshare of users on an even tighter budget while not losing out on those who don't mind spending a bit more for extra VRAM (plus it may prove helpful in competing with the 1060 depending on its price point and amount of vram). Plus they can also market the 480 as a $200 card while being able to sell a variant of it for $240.

So then is Tesla ripping off its customers by having a ludicrious speed software update that can be applied to any Model S for $10k to increase the performance of the engines? 

 

You pay just as much as much for software/firmware as you do for hardware when you buy a product. So you're paying more for more/better firmware that enables the full card.

technically GTX 970 is a crippled GTX 980 and so is the 1070 to the 1080

and so is an i5 to i7 and so on...

binning process is nothing new to the computer hardware market...

There will be more 4g models than 8g, this was made public by AMD themselves. It would be a massive insult to their customers to charge more for the same thing, though I'm starting to wonder if anything could be done by AMD to insult their customers.

And in a Model S the engines/battery/drive train are already there and in place for the ludicrious speed firmware. Yet they still charge $10k for it.

There's nothing wrong with them disabling features and selling it as a cheaper product. 

If Nvidia did this, you'd freak, and rightfully so. But continue to let AMD do no wrong. I mean what's the worst that could happen? Higher pricing on the competitors product and damaged motherboards from RX 480s? Like that would ever happen.

how do you get from RX 480 to damaged motherboards????

whatever...

if it was nVidia I'd probly do the same - tell people to get the cheaper option and do a vBIOS flash...

 

but still at this point it's just a speculation going by the words of Ryan... I made this topic to encourage people that are planning to buy an RX480 to get the 4GB model at first and try the BIOS flash mod - to let us know for sure if it works, and if it doesn't, then no loss just return the card and exchange for the 8GB model if you were going for it...

They aren't going to put 8GB on all cards and lock half of it away. All it takes is a BIOS flash and you've an 8GB card for the price of the 4GB card. 

 

AMD aren't stupid. The 6950 core unlocking was hilarious but they aren't going to repeat it like this. 

Same thing happened with the Fury. Many people were able to turn their Fury's into Fury Xs or ones with 3876 or whatever shaders.

Intel and Nvidia basically do this too. As do basically all chip manufacturers.

 

I'm not picking any sides here, I've always considered myself fairly impartial, and I've bitched at and defended both AMD and Nvidias actions on multiple occasions whenever one of these types of threads pops up. 

 

You're pretending like AMD is the only company to disable hardware on a product and then sell it as a cheaper product.
