My bet is that the RX 480 will be better but we won't know for sure until solid benchmarks come out from reputable reviewers.

480, even if the 970 performs a little better now the 480 has more VRAM and will age better. That's at the same price though. If you can get a 970 cheaper wait for the review to hit on the 480.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

Are you under a rock? There are 970s under 200us brand new right now. Just a matter of grabbing them before they're gone.

If Primal can only use 3g of VRAM with the textures maxed and the pack loaded, any memory issues are on the developers.  Joking aside. But I'd grab the 480 (with a custom cooler and 8g) too if given the choice. But if you're considering a 970 then if it's cheaper who am I to judge.

Depends on how the 480 performs and the price gap. If the 970 is 40$ less but the 480 actually beats a 980, wouldn't that make it better value? Anyhow, excess VRAM is always better than not enough VRAM

Have you been watching the leaks? We may know why AMD placed that NDA until launch. For the reference anyways. The 480 and 970 look to be even. Look to be though, and when considering the reference that seems to thermal limit. I'm still waiting for Sapphire to show us what the 480 can do.

Doubt the Thermal limit thing. Some leaks are showing 60*C others 80*C - and keep in mind that the actual driver support came 2 days ago so any of those "benches" are using 16.3 which was 3 months ago. Before the 480 was even properly announced. Remember how massive the 970 gains were with a proper driver in hitman? Upwards of 40%

Only a few days till the NDA is lifted. We shall know shortly. I hope they at least match the 980. That would be great.

The benchmarks are in Firestrike, which doesn't improve with driver support.

My guess is that the lower temp benchmarks are with modified coolers, like what Gamer Nexus did with the 1080 and a Hybrid cooler. Why I think we'll see more performance from Sapphire.

Let's wait 3 days :P - I still think performance will be better than a 970 cause the 480 is close to double the core count at the same clockspeed

RX 480 will almost certainly be the better card. And the cheaper card. Unless Nvidia throws in an awesome free game to help empty out the 970 stock I can't see how the 970 could be recommended over the 480. And I say this as a 970 owner who loves his card, it's tremendous for 1080p gaming and can do 1440p really well too in a lot of games (just not Witcher 3 or Crysis 3, for example). But all indications are the 480 is going to be the better card hands down. We won't know for sure until next Wednesday when reviews come out and we see how it overclocks and whether Polaris can be the same DX12 workhorse that Hawaii is, but it looks like it's going to be a really disruptive card in the market just like the 970 was in 2014. Like it's going to wipe out any reason to buy an Nvidia card lower than the 1070.

I'd be shocked if the 480 doesn't beat a 970.

Holy Crystal ball batman xD

Have you tested a 1060? Or the 1060ti? I agree that the 480 should be great competition for Nvidia. But let's not go crazy. How many times has AMD claimed victory only to give us a Fury X?

If anyone asks you never saw me.
