But seriously it does "confirm" a few of the specs, which does put it ever so slightly ahead of the 390x

$230, better than 390x. I don't know what to say.

 

I'm 75% sure I'm buying this. With the inclusion of CUDA as well, it should accelerate Adobe Premiere/After Effects.

The guys on r/AMD Shopped any screen grabs I could find with "polaris edition" in the title, mocking how cuda cores were listed.

Here's some Comparisons:

The RX 480 has the same amount of CUs as the 380X and 256 more Stream Processors than the R9 380X.

The RX 480 has 8 less CUs than the R9 390 and 256 less Stream Processors than the R9 390

The RX 480 has 12 less CUs than the R9 390X and 512 less Stream Processors than the R9 390X

 

Though the R9 390X has about 5.1tflops, the RX 480 will have probably more than 5.1tflops. But just because the RX 480 has 512 less Stream Processors and 12 less CUs doesn't mean it can't beat out the R9 390X.

Actually no, the R9 380X has 32 compute units, the R9 390 has 40, and the R9 390X has 44 CUs.

If it actually has cuda cores and performs the same as a normal cuda core main this would be one cheap video editing card

Boost clock implementations are a dramatic way to cut down light gaming power consumption, and maximize high end performance...

 

There really isn't a single reason not to use boost clocks anymore (even Intel uses them.)

Correction: It has 4 more CUs than the 380x, not less. Plus that's a 12.5% increase, which is quite noticeable.

The 480 has about 5.8 TFlops if you calculate off the boost clock, which puts it right against the 390x. If it is true you can overclock it to 1.5 ghz, that would put it at 6.9 TFlops, which would put it right behind the r9 fury at 7.1 TFlops. That's some pretty good performance and would mean an OC 480 is around a stock 980. And then add in architectural improvements.... Of course, it is possible though that AMD went backwards in ipc to get higher clocks.

I'm surprised anyone believed that the 480 would in fact have CUDA cores. This is obviously a marketing specs mistake by NewEgg.

 

As far as I'm aware, no one ever proved that AMD got a CUDA license. They made a CUDA cross compiler that took raw CUDA code and turned that code into some type of C code for use with OpenCL. AMD cards will not be running CUDA code anytime soon.

 

If someone believes I am wrong, please post a clear source proving otherwise.

If it is true you can overclock it to 1.5 ghz, that would put it at 6.9 TFlops, which would put it right behind the r9 fury at 7.1 TFlops. That's some pretty good performance and would mean an OC 480 is around a stock 980. And then add in architectural improvements.... Of course, it is possible though that AMD went backwards in ipc to get higher clocks.

In CUs and Stream Processors the RX 480 is closer to the R9 390 but yes by it having about 5.8tflops. 


Does that mean that it could possibly get really close to the GTX 1070?

It is possible if there is a noticeable increase in ipc and the 1.5 ghz rumors are true. I've even seen some 1.6 ghz rumors.  1.6 would give it more compute than the fury. Then add that 10% ipc (if it does increase ipc by 10%) and you're looking at close to fury X performance. Factor in the fact that it has less SPs and so won't be as underutilized like the fury X and you could potentially have a 300 dollar card that is 5-10% slower than the 1070. Of course, this is all based on rumors and guesses so I'm not so sure about it hitting 1.6 ghz though 1.5 ghz is quite likely and I'm pretty sure ipc will be increased, though it may not be a 10% increase. But yeah, the 480 could possibly challenge the 1070 from below.

Change thermal paste to IC Diamond with the cooler being great for overclocking you surely surpass Fury and 1070 easily.

Wow if that's true, I'm pretty impressed. 5% to 10% slower isn't too bad especially for being around half the price of the 1070.

 

Still looking forward to them benchmarks.
