You seriously need to calm down. First of all, you cannot compare core counts when talking about entirely different generations. The 1080 has less cores than a 980 Ti, yet it's quite a bit faster. The 1070 has 1920 cores against the 980 Ti's 2816, and yet they perform roughly the same. We all know that the 980 Ti is 30% faster on average when compared to a GTX 980, so to say it will only be 10% is simply nonsense.

 

This mobile 1080 is rumored to have more cuda cores than the 1070 (2048 vs 1920) and it's boost clock is only 40mhz lower than the desktop 1070. We can assume performance will be very comparable between the two. If that is true, it is a worthy successor to that desktop class 980 that was being put in notebooks not too long ago.

I mean... higher performance than a gtx 980 with laptop grade power consumption? Why is that bad? Maybe they'll allow the desktop version to be put in laptops like the 980 was, but it makes a lot of sense that that would not be the "standard" laptop option.

The 1080 also runs at MUCH higher clockspeed. And a stock 1070 gets hammered by a stock 980 Ti. (talking base clocks for both). Pascal performs well ONLY due to the clockspeed

Nothing laptop-grade abot 150W - if it were 100W yes. 150W laptops are furnaces

I wouldn't exactly call 5-10% difference in performance at stock as "getting hammered". As i stated before. This mobile 1080 has slightly more cores, and very similar clock speeds to the 1070. Factor in that the TDP is exactly the same as the desktop 1070, and you can basically assume comparable performance.

 

We have seen laptops with the GTX 980 Notebook graphics in it, which TDP's vary from 125-165w, and have seen evidence of them not throttling. While I do not expect this to be the case in ultra thin laptops, the larger "gaming" laptops from MSI and ASUS ROG are likely to handle it just fine with their robust cooling solutions. 

 

Before we go forward with the TDP half of this debate, keep in mind that i specialize in SFF. I understand completely how even 10w of additional heat can be critical to avoid throttling. I delidded my 6700k just so it could run at stock speeds under AVX2 Prime95 (48k FFT) on a 45mm vapor chamber.
