Why is AMD releasing the RX series so cheap?

c00face

Besides what was posted on their website about making available cards for gamers at a budget price. There has to be a reason their releasing it this cheap. Did they built the GPU using cheap parts? Is it some sort of 3D printed card that we don't know about? Any one can guess why?

because it's not that fast as compared to last gen cards i would assume?

The GPU itself is smaller, the RAM only gets cheaper over time, the shroud has already been developed for the fury... and they want to hit a demographic.

AMD wants to gain market share. Smaller gpus are easier and cheaper to produce, and yields are better, so for their first product on this process, it makes sense.

if they made it more expensive then nobody would buy it cause you can get 1080s for $600 and 1070s for <$400

ONE, because they can, and TWO, because nvidia cards are, and have been over priced.

a vanilla 980 in China is $180.

To make Nvidia lower the price on their cards and to get people to buy Radeon cards.  I've heard that two RX 480 cards in Crossfire will outperform the 1080

Its cheaper to produce, really that simple.

That coupled with economics 101...

For the same reason the r9 290 was so cheap at release. Because they could, because they needed the market share, because it forced nvidia to do something about it.

And 970ish level performance isn't amazing this gen. In fact, charging 200 for last gen second tier performance seems about right

They are trying to strengthen their hold on the mid/low end market by releasing powerful GPUs for cheap, basically blocking nvidia out of that part of the market. So now people will buy an RX480 instead of a last gen or low end 1000 series nvidia card.

I would assume because nvidia is ahead of them in every way. so they had to do something really good to gain more people buying their cards.

Some of these comments are indicative of how Nvidia gets away with gouging the consumer market.

AMD has done, and would probably do the same if they were on top.

All about the bad consumers.

You are in a pretty salty stage already.  Seriously, stop with the snobby approach you have to a card that's not even released yet.  :(

I wouldn't be too impressed either if I paid a lot of money for a card that was matched by another for less than half the price.

I'm laughing at the absurdity of comparing the value I've received out of an existing piece of kit vs something that doesn't even physically sell on the market yet.
