do you think nvidia will make a generation after pascal like in 2017? i have a GTX 980 and im hoping it can last that long because i need a 6 core cpu and being too young for a job it is very hard to get money so i cant do both. if nvidia does do another generation how big of a improvement you think it would be from my 980 for example as big as pascal?

there are still going to be pascal cards released in 2017

so no, the next generation will most likely be in 2018-2020

oh and btw no you dont need a 6 core CPU

you want it

dont be so spoiled

Will nvidia make another generation after Pascal?  Yes, it's called Volta.  Were you worried they were just gonna close up shop and say "that's it!  We're done!  this is the fastest GPUs will ever be so that's it"? :P

If you're too young for a job, why on earth do you need a 6 core CPU?

There will always be a next generation, unless they go bankrupt and no one sees them fit for purchase.

If it's still on pascal how would they improve the cards? Also why do you think I don't need a 6 core cpu?

There are few workloads that need more than 8 threads, a 6 cores CPU has 12 threads

Well don't worry ;)  Not even NVIDIA is that smug.  Rockstar... maybe :P

They have only released the mid size Pascal chip, which is known as GP104.  If we look at what Nvidia has done in the past, the full size chip will most likely be released in early 2017.  It will most likely be known as the gtx 1080 ti, and you can expect roughly 20% to 30% faster than the gtx 1080.

Not necessarily. AMD 6-cores only have 6 threads.

I wrote an image processing program that will use as many threads as there are rows in the image (so 1080 for 1080p).  Take that for a workload :P

No wait it was as many columns... lol I can't even remember what I did xD

Woops, I meant Intel CPUs, AMD obviously doesn't have hyper-threading (yet!)

That's still damn good.  Overclock it if you can/need to, but even without you should be just fine for a while.

My speculation would be that NVIDIA's next generation of GPUs will not have as big of a performance increase between Maxwell and Pascal. A main factor contributing to the significant difference in performance was due to the fact that Maxwell was based on a 28nm node, whereas Pascal made the jump to 16mn. This process node jump allows them to cram transistors on the die at an unprecedented density compared to previous generations of cards. NVIDIA will likely be sticking with a 16nm process for their next generation of cards, so I wouldn't expect as much of an increase.

I actually couldn't underclock my 5 year old GPU to make it as slow as a next-gen console.

DISCLAIMER: These statements refer only to products that are not already in the late stages of development.

No, But in February a powerful representative of Intel released a very public statement that basically said "there is not much advancement in transistor based logic, expect to see spintronics based gpus in 18 months, and spintronics based processors in a few years". He added that Intel was shifting focus from raw compute power to efficiency.

gtx1080ti

gtx1060

gtx1050

possibly more

those are most likely coming out in 2017 or really late 2016

and you dont need a 6 core cpu because you're 14 and you're not doing 3d rendering or video editing as a daily job and making money from it

a consumer 4 core 8 thread i7 or even an i5 is more than enough for what you need to do

i do video editing for home moves like 4 times a year and video editing takes advantage of all cores

yes there will

and 4 times a year is barely anything

unless you're editing 8 hours a day or something, thats just a waste

you can edit perfectly fine on a 4 core or 8 thread CPU

rendering it will take a few minutes longer, not a big deal unless you do that as a job and need to edit so many hours every day

you need to get your priorities sorted out

there is a huge difference between "need" and "want"

Never thought Id hear spintronics in this forum.  Hooray!

Spintronics is still pretty far away though.  The cosest thing in reach that is related to spintronics is MRAM IMO.
