Will you hate me?

Guest

So whenever I mention my PC specs to someone, they usually get annoyed about how I have a 5930K and 32GB RAM paired with a GTX 970. And I tell them the long, ridiculous story of how it came to be. And then they don't seem to care. And then I promise them I'll upgrade soon. Now that pascal is coming out, I have saved some money. Will people hate me just as much for having a 1070 and a 970 for PhysX just because it's an xx70 card? Or more, is the GTX 1070 (with a 970 for PhysX) a good match for my 5930K, or does it still seem as stupid as the 970 seemed? Thanks!

I have a 970 with my 4790k and 32gb of ram. I'm happy with it and if you are happy with your system, I think that is all that matters.

A 970 is a bad ass card, my buddy get over 100fps playing Doom with a high refresh monitor. No reason to feel bad.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

If it's capable of doing what you need then does it matter? Half the people on here are ignorant and will "advise"  someone to not get a better gpu because it will "bottleneck"

It would be great if you knew PhysX cards don't work.

What you could do is use the 970 as a backup card for DX12. Since SLI isn't needed.

Not to brag but like this is like the build I plan on building later this year it's like amazing because it'll be great for 1440p gaming at 60fps on high to ultra settings...

Seriously though, @ChickenNugget I think why a lot of people tend to hate on you/your build is because you spent way more on your CPU than GPU which I mean from a gaming oriented perspective isn't a great idea... But if you're doing some heavy CPU bound task an i7 5820K or i7 5930K will be great for that...

Technically an i7 4790K/i7 6700K is just as good. Though remembering from a suggestion that was unrelated to the thread I had made, @MadyTehWolfie had suggested I go for an i7 4790K over an i5 6600K but I felt that for my case an i7 4790K would be too expensive and I wouldn't really reap the benefits of an i7.

Where as if I go with an i5 6600K if I feel that I need the extra performance a little bit down the road and the Z170 boards look better, and the price difference between DDR3 and DDR4 is almost gone now. Especially with the DDR3 and DDR4 kits I would go with. Though the i5 4690K is a little cheaper but with my current config it's more like $14 cheaper, and I do lose the aesthetic that I was trying to go for.

Though not to pick on @MadyTehWolfie as it's a very valid point and in some cases it's not a bad suggestion... It's just that my performance standards aren't terribly high for my build as I'm mostly going to be gaming and I just want a 60fps average at 1440p on high to ultra settings which the GPU would be mostly responsible for getting that, though doing school work/browsing the web is another thing I'd want to do... It'd cost me more for the i7 4790K.

Regardless, an i7 5930K and a GTX 970 isn't a bad combination if you're playing at 1080p or 1440p on lower settings or if you just need the GPU to help out the CPU in some graphically demanding tasks other than gaming.

I don't think I got to your answer and I kind of went a bit off topic... Well then....

PhysX WOULD still add to performance. So there's no reason not to do it really...

The only thing I could think of people hating you for is getting a 5930K over a 5820K if you aren't using a multi-gpu setup.

Physx degrades performance, it definitely doesn't improve it.

whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat? what does it do? I thought it made stuff look better at NO performance cost because it was it's own card.

No, there are a few OLD games it can help with but for most of the games you play it's tosh.

But if developers enable the feature in DX12 you could use both and get much better results.

what on earth are you on about OP. Who hates someone over a graphics card? and if you are that concerned, sell the 970 and put the money towards a 1080 instead. I mean come on, what planet are you on? You do realize most people aren't in a position to get bleeding edge tech right? Just be content with what you have and screw everyone else, especially getting haters over a friggin graphics card, have I missed the point here? I'm confused.
