Identity crisis... Or what?

Hello. 

 

Looks like I am adding weirder and weirder questions here but in Reddit usually no-one answers. So I trust this forum. :) 

 

The thing is that I feel very old. I am actually sixteen but the mental age tests I have taken tells me that I am 50 years old. Is this weird?  

 

I have noticed that at school when there are people talking when teacher is... well... teaching it makes me mad. When the teacher is talking you should shut up and listen.

The other thing is that people my age dress very ugly. I don't know if I should dress like them or my own... If I dress like I want I'm afraid of being bullied. I definitely need no more bullying... 

I simply love old music from 80's and I can't stand Justin Bieber or any modern bullshit. 

 

Could my mental age be explained with that I didn't have a lot of friends that had "young souls"? Or could my mental age explain why I didn't have friends? 

 

Don't get me wrong I'm not bragging about being mentally old. It has also downsides... My shyness is horrible. I don't have any friends because of it. I don't dare to speak to people because of my bullying experiences. I don't trust people...

 

Well. Looks like this is getting a bit off the topic I would say... Maybe I should start a blog...

You're just you and if I have to be honest, you're not a special snowflake or whatever. In school I always found those loud students annoying too, got bullied as well, was a quiet kid and I knew a lot of people in high school who loved 80's music and such. Those are all pretty common things.

It's not weird to think you're different, don't fit in, are not 'normal', etc. You're in puberty, you're becoming an adult, you are being forced to take decision at that point that dictate how you will live your life. 

 

Sometimes it's easy to stay bland/normal/average, but sometimes you should be yourself and accept that you may be weird. And you know what? There is nothing wrong with being weird, fuck those that tell you otherwise.

Don't let those fuckhead bullies tell you what you can and can't do. It's your life, not theirs. They will likely never be significant to your life after high school anyways.

Me and another friend also have been called old souls, but many people (mostly adults) really preferred us because we appeared more adult (I am only 20) and everyone thinks that I am at least 5 years older.  Basically in HS it won't last, but in the professional world it is for the better

I'm 18 and I also hate it when people talk when someone like a teacher is explaining things. I'm also quite shy, I also got bullied, I don't join general trends (when it comes to fashion and stuff), I also hate that justin bieber crap. I also tend to get along better with adults than with people my own age.

 

However, I spend 30% of my time sleeping, 30% at school, 10% browsing the internet and the other 30% is spent playing games like super smash brother melee just because I like doing that. I also don't like 80's music but I do like some of the modern less popular electronic music (as I said before, not the justin bieber popular crap but the real good stuff).


Because of this I don't think it's a matter of having an old soul, I would say it's just being different and not choosing the 'easy' path of being normal. Not everyone is the same so not everyone has to act the same. Choose your own path and life and do what you want (just try to not murder people in the process :P).

21 year old here: you seem sixteen and fine to me; I believe the trick is to simply continue living and don't try too much to be like others. At the moment, I think being an adult is about letting go of several elements of you that grow tiresome, while settling those few you feel more comfortable with. In time, this process and the experiences you have build your identity. I don't think there's a shortcut, you just live and it happens when you don't fight it.

I understand what you are trying to say but the thing is that I don't want to be too different. And if I try to fit in it just doesn't feel right.

 

And I know that 80s music doesn't add 50 years. That was just a example.

Seems like teenage type questions to me. Would ask myself that too. I did go through the typical teenage angst phase for like 6 months and thought the whole idea was stupid and pointless and did my own thing without worrying about what others think of me. It's very liberating. I would say most people pretend to be someone else in High School because of peer pressure. Be yourself and always be confident with yourself, confidence is what attracts most people no matter how you look.

Seems like you come off as a very rude or arrogant person at school that sets them above everyone else. Nothing against you but people are people. You aren't special you just have different morals or focus more on the future. There is this kid in my class who is hard set on being the president, he won't, but that attitude really is more distracting then kids talking. But if you keep to yourself and don't push into eveyone then I am ok with that

I had the same shyness problem as you years ago, i lived in my own, my own songs, my peculiar vehicular taste (you can see it reflected in my actual ride) had friends, but not very close ones.

All of a sudden i apply to a job in a local body and engine repair shop, got interested in politics, made a opinion, talked to older people, wiser people, this was where my life truly started going forward.

I believe this is normal, i've seen many people go through these phases, people are moody by nature.

They are probably just handling it in a way that isn't apperant to you.

I was pretty introverted too when I was 16.  I didnt have a whole lot of friends, ate lunch by myself and was always thinking my own stuff.  I didnt get good grades and was constantly at odds with teachers.  I felt what they were teaching had little significance and was holding me back.

 

I felt pretty hopeless and I guess the turning point was when i started studying physics in junior year.  I think i finally found a subject that I could excel in.  I pursued it continuously and 15 years later, I have a Phd and work in a field related to computers

 

As for OP, I guess when he/she finds his/her own niche or unique way to do something in life, everything will seem better.  It did for me.

 

As for disliking modern music, i think that is a sign of intelligence.
