Noctua Cooler and RAM

baloonis

Greetings. I am building my first gaming PC and I may have made a slight mistake. I already bought the RAM  (http://www.e-shop.gr/ram-gskill-f4-2133c15d-16gvr-16gb-2x8gb-ddr4-2133mhz-ripjaws-v-dual-channel-kit-p-PER.557667)

but I am not sure if it will interfere with the Noctua NH-D15 (or 14) that I want to get as CPU cooler (I haven't bought it yet).

It does state on the official site (http://www.gskill.com/en/product/f4-2133c15d-16gvr) that its height is suitable for most oversized CPU heatsinks. Does anyone have any personal experience from these two hardware pieces. Will they fit?

Otherwise, do I have to take out the motherboard, place the RAM, and then measure the space that I am left to work with? Or maybe pick another CPU cooler which is smaller? And which would you recommend?

The rest of my hardware include Z170 pro gaming motherboard, i5 6600K CPU and Gigabyte G1 gaming gtx 970 card

Thanks a lot.

Seek and you shall find.

i have slight phobia against big dual tower heatsinks

im using the Asus B150 pro gaming motherboard and my Dark Rock Pro 3's heatpipe is blocking the first ram slot closest to the cpu

so i can only use 3 dimm slots, but 2 dimms only for the best performance

maybe its just the DRP3 having poor heatpipe design at the bottom, but still...

so it might be best for you to just get AIO or other single tower air coolers

edit: and oh, im using vengeance LPX ram, so its a low profile ram

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

How troublesome is it to have 2 dimms avaialble? I mean if the PC is running good otherwise, it shouldn't be a problem even if the cooler is blocking 1 slot.

yea, but i had my expectation in mind when i was building that i could add another 2x4gb ram to become 16gb with 2x 2x4gb ram kits

but i had to buy 2x8gb ram kit, and leave my 2x4gb aside `-` i could sell it but its trouble that i never want to face

Your RAM is too tall for D15. Its too tall for all coolers which hang over RAM slots.

Are there coolers that do not hang over RAM slots? How do I find them?

Ram clearance of the d15 is 32mm. The ram you have bought is 42mm tall. So the noctua seem to be a no go.

How do you know the RAM clearance is 32mm? I looked at the cooler's specifications but I can't find it http://noctua.at/en/products/cpu-cooler-retail/nh-d15/specification

You need to scale down. Cryorighs H7 is one of better ones. Then all AIOs and even smaller air coolers.

Download Information sheet from Service tab. It says that right under RAM compatibility.

From the data sheet "Thanks to its recessed lower fins, the NH-D15 provides 64mm clearance for tall memory heatsinks"

the front push fans placement can limit ram clearance to 32 mm. as long as you're willing to remove and reinstall the cooler if you want to add/remove ram you'll be fine with the d15, they're pretty good about not shoving heat pipes over ram slots as well

Hello. I decided to go with the Cryorig R1 universal which has limitless RAM height compatibility.

The NH-D15S would have worked out perfectly for you as it basically is an NH-D15 with only one fan in the middle.  The D15's heatsinks can support the taller memory, however it's the fan on the outside of the cooler that causes the clearance issues.  I have Corsair Dominator Platinum memory with a NH-D15S and couldn't be happier.
