My friend -- I can't stop him from this mistake...

zeusthunder369

Wondering if anyone else has gone through this and has an idea for something to convince my buddy he's wasting his money. His actual build is just fine, it's just what he plans to do with it that is weird.

He's building a pretty standard enthusiast rig, with SLI GTX 980 Tis. That's all fine.

But, he's just going to use a regular ol' 1080p monitor!! He's spending like 3.5k on his rig (including all of the sleeving and other extra things) but won't spend money on a high hertz (144), high resolution (4/5k), or ultrawide (3440x1440 resolution) monitor! If he insists on just sticking with a 1080p, that's fine no worries, but don't need anywhere near what he's building in order to get fantastic FPS on 1080p.

I'm in the process of building a similar system, not spending as much on the rig, but am getting an Ultrawide monitor (3440x1440). Even so, just can't change his mind. Oh, and no he has NO plans to upgrade his monitor later.

-snip-

Tell him that unless he wants to see pixelated giraffes eating bananas in antarctica, he should get at least a 1440p monitor indeed! Or just tell him to get sli 980's and hell be fine i guess. Or maybe make him get the best possible 1080p display!

I knew some guy who had a 980 Ti and a 1440x900 monitor...

Although i'm kinda of the guy that likes sticking to their monitor to it breaks.

Crazy idea to run dual 390X or something on 1680x1050P monitor in the future.

Tell him without that 1440P, his 2nd GTX 980Ti is just twiddling its thumbs doing nothing, while his power bill increases. Don't like a employee to sit there do nothing while you still pay him his monthly salary.

I need you to do something for me OP! Find your friend, lean in close to him, and whisper "hey dumbshit"....now in that 2 second window of him thinking of a good comeback smack him upside the head and tell him to re prioritize his build!

I'm using a cheap monitor now but unlike him I plan to upgrade it....know what? smack him TWICE.

You realize that he can get a new display anytime?

I don't see a problem if he wants to stick to 1080p now, maybe he is waiting for a particular 4K display to go on sale or something.

Or maybe he just wants to be absolutely certain that his games won't dip under 60 hz ever.  Although if he wants to play Fallout 4 is going to happen, no mater what. xD

Mystery is the source of all true science.

If he has already decided, I doubt that there is anything you can say to him at this point to change his mind. I have a friend who is doing something similar but he at least plans on upgrading (to a single 4K) in the future.
