Sounds like this will be either the 490x, or their flagship GPU. They're pushing hard for improved power efficiency, but I wonder if this will perform much better than the Fury X, since it has the same amount of shader cores. It may be able to be clocked higher because it's more power efficient. Unless AMD's contracts lock it down like they did with the Nano, I could see manufacturers giving it a bulky heatsink/more power connectors, and clocking it much higher than reference cards on some models.

Interesting. Shader cores aren't everything, so doesn't say much about actual performance. There are also ROPs and TMUs among other things. AMD had some trouble feeding all those shader cores on the Fiji chips if I recall correctly. 

 

I wonder whether AMD will keep the Fury brand or if it was a one-off thing. That would help determine where this slots in. It's most likely above 480.

"Greeland" is what is now known as the Vega GPU, which is coming at the end of the year to co-exist with Polaris. Unlike Polaris it will have HBM2

Sounds like this will be either the 490x, or their flagship GPU. They're pushing hard for improved power efficiency, but I wonder if this will perform much better than the Fury X, since it has the same amount of shader cores. It may be able to be clocked higher because it's more power efficient. Unless AMD's contracts lock it down like they did with the Nano, I could see manufacturers giving it a bulky heatsink/more power connectors, and clocking it much higher than reference cards on some models.

Point is factors such as the design of the architecture could limit the boost in clock speeds, after all AMD does typically have lower overall clock speeds.

It says nothing of even the performance of the shader cores themselves. Like I said in the other thread, this number is absolutely meaningless without the performance of  another Vega GPU as a reference.

#1 Please change the title to Vega instead of Greenland since Greenland is AMD's old code name that isn't used anymore.

#2 I am assuming that then probably AMD has highly improved the ipc as well as improved clock speeds in order to tive us the same 4096 stream processors As Fiji. 

#3 Could indicate that with Polaris we will be seeing GPUs with less stream processors than Fiji... Interesting.

A die like the one from 45 to 28nm yielded around 20-30% performance increase. However this time it will be a huge jump. Much larger than in many years.

So the increase we get this time is probably not going to scale comparably with previous die shrinks

So same shaders as Fury X yet they improved GCN quite a lot. Larger jump in performance for sure. As far as clock speeds it will be interesting to see what they'll pull off.

Well, the Polaris 10 GPU we saw was around 2000 shaders (can't remember exactly) and only ran at 800MHz, with that it was able to be at least faster than an R9 290, we can see AMD has made some large improvements to it's shaders.

Yeah, no doubt. Though Vega being higher end flagship with HBM2 also they'll be pushing performance. It's about how much they balance performance/efficiency.

I believe Polaris 10/11 will push efficiency, while Vega 10\11 will push performance, much like Nvidia with the 950/960, 970/980 and the 980 Ti/ Titan X.

Yeah. I imagine they've done testing and found that the die space available to them is better used on adding other things than more shaders. Besides, the shaders themselves have probably improved. 

 

In any case, these are all rumors and there is no telling that even if specs are correct, that the chip attached to the rumor is correct.
