a Skylake i3 or i5 would work the best.  However, the Xeon E3 1231 V3 would also get you great results without spending a premium on the i7 if you need the extra threads.

For the Best builds and Price lists here is a world where many points of the price have been predefined already for your convenience!

The Xeon E3 1231 V3 IS BETTER Than the Core i5 4690K and a Significantly better value for the non-overclockers or value shoppers.

The OS is like a kind food, Try it before saying if you like it or don't.

the minimum CPU I would pair a 970 with is an i5

look at the 4460 and 6400

Pentax KM w/ 55mm f/1.8 SMC lens

Zenit-E w/ 58mm f/2 Helios lens

I also forgot to mention my psu is 500W, so I dont know if it will hold overclocking. Plus I already have my 970 powered by it...

at least a low end i5. or a high end i5 would be best because you wouldn't get any CPU bottlenecking

I'd go with a 4690k so you can reuse your ram. Otherwise $250 isnt enough for skylake i5, ddr4 and motherboard.  Or just ride out the high hope train, grab a 8320 when they are on sale for $100 bucks and wait for zen.

4690k. That being said, I haven't been terribly CPU-bottlenecked with my pentium G4400 I don't think. YMMV of course and I'm running linux so that gives me an advantage, but whatever.

If you've got the money for the 4690k, GET IT.

you got gtx 970 and u have amd fx-6300. that means u have motherboard based on amd am3+. so if u have enough money to buy i5-4690k than u have to change your motherboard based on intel lga-1150 or u just need to upgrade to amd fx-8350 (same socket like amd fx-6300) without changing your motherboard
Both of processor are good for gaming. Overclock is possible for two processor. Just choose with your current budget :3

An 8350 can allegedly bottleneck a 390 (which, by the way, in terms of raw performance, is basically identical to the 970 despite the 390 beating it in some games and the 970 beating it in some games). I haven't heard of an i5 legitimately bottlenecking even a 980 Ti (which runs rings around the 970 and the 390), so yeah... go with the 4690k.

Definitely a 4690k if you can afford it and new motherboard.

Better yet would be 6600k but that would require you to also get new DDR4 RAM.
