iPhone SE has same A9 as 6s, old TouchID and old selfie cam

asim1999

I think having 3D touch would be really helpful to have especially on a smaller SE display. I use it all the time to place my cursor when typing something long. Don't think I'll ever get an iphone without it now. Don't knock it till you've used it properly.

Consumers need to start boycotting the 16gb model already. 32gb should be the minimum in 2016.

Yeah but not 1000+ mAh. That's just not happening.

My 5s with 90% battery health achieved 5 hours of SOT watching Netflix and Youtube with about 15% left to spare. A7 going to A8 was a minor performance increase, but a rather sizeable efficiency increase and A8 to A9 was a minor efficiency increase but big performance increase. I've said this before- if they make a 5s with the specs of the 6s with the same battery capacity of the 5s, battery life would be really good, almost too good, especially at 1500mah.

I've yet to use it, but I imagine it's the same case as TouchID. When it came out, it was really good but people discounted it. Now, it's a necessary feature.

I'd say it's different still. I've had a 6s+ since it launched (and a 5s since it launched) and I've never once used 3D Touch, but I instantly loved touchid. Although I'm honestly not sure if that's because I find 3D Touch useless/gimmicky or if it's because it's cumbersome and awkward to use on such a large device (I feel like multi tasking 3D Touch would be very useful but it's very difficult to do one handed).

Only because people don't really know how or what to make use of it because it's a new thing. I was quite clueless with the 3D touch the first few weeks I got my 6S. I went to some forum and asked the avid ios users there and only then found out most if not all of the usage features of 3D touch. Switching apps, peek and pop links and email, cursor placement to name a few ways I use it the most.

This phone is a contradiction. They put A9 SOC in it and full 2GB RAM BUT then they don't put the camera on par with the 6s and they don't put a barometer.

This feels like they focused on budget but managed to remain competent in most areas.

So, uhm, somehow the iPhone SE with its smaller battery (like over 1000 mAh smaller) gets better battery life than a 6S+ even though the A9 is clocked at the same speeds.

What magic is this? I mean, it's not just the lower screen resolution right?

Probably clocked way slower. Like 1.3Ghz instead of the A9's typical 1.86GHz. The iPhone 5s used an underclocked A7 an the iPhone 5 used (effectively) an underclocked A6X. They were all at 1.3GHz. Then the A8 came along and they made it 1.4GHz.

It has the same back camera as the 6s, its just the front camera that is lower, probably because its the same display/glass/camera assembly as the previous iPhone and keeps the cost low

Why would I buy an SE? If I loved IOS I wouldn't buy one. It just has too many compromises.

Like what? I dont see any compromises that particularly effect 99% of its function, only real downside to me is the selfie camera, but its not the end of the world

I refuse to buy or ever use phones under 4.7 inches.  OR conversely any phone over 5.7 inches.

I like phones at the sweat spot of around 5.3-5.5 inches .

okay... but Apple make the 6s and 6s plus (and soon the 7)

its not like they ONLY sell the SE, so not sure what point your are making, from a customer standpoint this is a great option

not only is it a smaller and cheaper iPhone, it still retains the performance and camera, plus touch ID, of the bigger more expensive model

that sounds good to me

But they arent, two phones with near identical hardware at different sizes are not better or worse than each other, just different sizes

Like i want to replace my 18" Gaming laptop, with a 13" one, because its smaller and lighter

id happily take LESS performance, in trade for MORE portability

just because you like large phones, does not mean everyone does, for example i fine the 6s plus too large, I cannot comfortably hold the phone or type one handed, because I have small short fingers and its just too large for my pocket

I can barely cope with the size of the 6, its great for gaming and youtube, but for other stuff I still find it too large

Touchid gen 1, old selfie camera, no 3D Touch, and no barometer. None of that would even factor into my decision making (nor would it factor into many others').

Yea... no!

Not everybody uses a phone as a portable video player. Some people use a phone for work-related applications (like myself), and for those applications, it is far batter to use the phone single-handed. It does not matter how large or beefy your fingers are; operating a phone larger than 4.5 is cumbersome.

I have multiple times tried holding on to many of these phablet-sized phones (even very recently), and I have yet to find a single one that was not annoyingly uncomfortable.

As an owner of both a 5s and a 6s+ I couldn't agree more. Although I personally use my phone for just Internet and I find the extra space to vastly improve my experience, and lucky for me I have big enough hands that I can use the 6s+ single handed when I need to. I typed this out with one hand and it maybe took 10% longer.

I only have 3gb that I share with both my parents, so if I wanted to stream I would have to upgrade to the larger plan, that would costs an extra $20/month. Plus I like having all (well....most) my music with me wherever I go and not have to worry about if I'll have service. And I get better battery life by not having to stream -- my 6s+ lasts me about two to two and a half days on a single charge.

I I just don't like the idea of a cloud for storage -- I like having access to all the files and rarely ever sync my phone, so I don't have much in the way of a hard backup. Plus I like to have my pictures with me (not them at 16gb is limiting in that regard, I only have like 1gb after three years or so). My thing with photos is a bit weird because I do back them up locally ever so often and I only have the pictures I've taken with my phone and none from my SLR...so, yeah, like I said, my photos situation is a bit nonsensical.
