This is basically AMD's last shot at regaining relevancy in the world of gaming/enthusiast CPUs. Hope they made some major improvements over the last generation of FX chips.

If you are going by that statement it will need to be just a smidgen higher than Skylake.

I'm not a rocket scientist but to me if it has higher IPC then Broadwell, it has to have higher IPC at equal clock speed... Otherwise it would literally be false?

Intel's going to have their next generation ready (or almost ready) with it's own set of improvements by October. AMD is not going to want to merely match the (by then) last-gen competition, they'll want to exceed its performance by a decent margin.

Yes, but the point is that Zen's IPC is lower than Skylake's. AMD will have to push the clock speed of Zen up by a bit to counteract that deficit.

So much speculation and falsehoods in those quotes that I'm skeptical of the accuracy. 

 

Intel's 14nm is better than Samsung's. I don't think there is a single parameter where it isn't better. Intel's 10nm process is not using EUV (as far as I know); 7nm is. Most projections place Zen at around Haswell IPC, not a tad behind Skylake. I do, however, wish that the latter was the case.

 

An October release does seem reasonable and I think ahead of schedule. I would have figured a late November release was in the cards. 

 

To me it seems like Bristol Ridge and Summit Ridge launch dates are coming dangerously close to each other. That's gonna be bad for sales even though they don't compete directly.

AMD does not need to beat Intel. They just need to compete with Intel, and if Zen performs sufficiently well for the cost, that might be my next upgrade path.

Well, they do have something to compensate, since it's almost impossible to beat Intel with their current advantages: value proposition. I'm not just talking price but also feature sets. So many ways to give your customers value than raw performance. 

 

Note: this doesn't mean people will be buying $200 processors with 16 threads as some seem to think.

ATM they have zero competitive capability, a skylake i3 matches or beats a FX 9590 in anything but raw rendering power. It is outright retarded how bad a situation they are in now.

 

If they get around Broadwell IPC/STP they would be able to price their products just 10-15% lower then intel products and beat Intel on price to performance.

Also, if their chipset offers better features, they are set to make great profit
