HIS Digital Leak Confirms AMD R-200 Series Graphic Cards – R9-290 Cards Based on Hawaii GPU

A few moments ago, we detailed the possible codenames of AMD’s upcoming Volcanic Islands family of graphic cards which are going to be released in October 2013. It was only a matter of time before more credible details came along and looks like manufacturer HIS Digital has confirmed the AMD R-200 series.
AMD R-200 Series codenamed ‘Volcanic Islands’ is a mix of refreshed Southern Islands cards and a new Hawaii GPU based on the new architecture. It won’t be a surprise if AMD dropped a new GPU name on the refreshed cards like they did to their mobile Solar Series GPUs codenamed ‘Venus’. Nevertheless, the codenames seem to be accurate and the AMD R-200 series would replace the Radeon HD 7000 series graphic cards after a wait of two years. The ‘R’ denotes Radeon, ’2′ denoted the family, and the other two digits would denote the graphics positioning which in the case of Hawaii based GPU would be AMD R-290 and successor to the Pitcairn cards would be denoted by the AMD R-280 branding.
HIS Digital lists a total of 7 branding six GPU tiers which are listed below:

"9xxx series" naming:
  • AMD R-290 Hawaii (Tahiti’s Successor)
  • AMD R-280 (Replacing HD 7800 Series)
  • AMD R-270 (Replacing HD 7700 Series)
  • AMD R-260 (Replacing HD 7600 Series)
  • AMD R-250 (Replacing HD 7500 Series)
  • AMD R-240 (Replacing HD 7400 Series)
And even more from HIS:
  • HIS R9 280X iPower IceQ X² Boost Clock 3GB GDDR5 PCI-E DLDVI-I/HDMI/2xMini DP
  • HIS R7 250 iCooler 2GB DDR3 PCI-E HDMI/SLDVI-D/VGA

AMD Radeon R9 280X, features 3GB GDDR5 memory
Radeon R9 and R7 segments, most likely to be released together. The R9 segment will kick off with R9 280X graphics card, which will replace the HD 7970 GHz Edition. This is probably the most anticipated model featuring Hawaii XT GPU. We do not know how many Stream Processors it will have, but don’t be surprised if the number is somewhere between 2304 and 2560. It is now officially confirmed that the successor to HD 7970 will have 3GB GDDR5 memory, most likely across 384-bit interface. The iPower IceQ X2 from HIS will be equipped with a Dual-DVI connector along with HDMI and two mini-DisplayPorts. Of course it will support Power Tune Boost technology as well. It looks like a direct copy of HIS 7970 IceQ X² 3GB GDDR5 PCI-E DVI/HDMI/2xMini DP (iPower). It is unknown whether guys from HIS made any changes to the cooling solution.

More info:
There would be two products positioning in the AMD Radeon R-200 lineup, the R9-200 series would make use of the Hawaii, Tahiti, Pitcairn GPU while the R7-200 series would feature the Cape Verde and Bonaire GPUs which are entry level models. The complete lineup would look something like the following but don’t hold your bets on this since this chart is based off preliminary information from GPU-z:
post-2255-0-30229400-1379080225_thumb.pn
The names are yet to be fully confirmed but it seems so as if the bulk of the mainstream cards would be based on older or revised versions of current Southern Islands chips. This would mean more cheaper Tahiti’s and Pitcairn’s could be on the road from AMD while the main flagship Hawaii would remain as the only new part competing against NVIDIA’s GK110 core. Only time would tell whether the Hawaii can erupt the greatness of NVIDIA’s Titan and GeForce GTX 780 GPUs and can their refreshed cards hold up against NVIDIA’s own refreshed GeForce 700 series cards in value.

FYI, that article @ video cardz was updated today.

It seems that someone from HIS made a huge mistake today by posting more information about the future AMD products.

Because of the new leak I had to update the chart from yesterday. Finally it all makes sense. The Radeon R9 290 will be a successor to dual-gpu Radeon HD 7990, just as we thought earlier. The Radeon R9 280 series will correspond to single-gpu Radeon HD 7900 series. Some numbers have changed and it will surely be confusing right now for those who did not follow the recent news. Just look at the chart and see what I mean:

Worst naming scheme ever. Why don't they keep their existing naming scheme (7XXX,9XXX)? D:

At this point we don’t know whether R9 270 series will feature new GPU, it’s hard to say what could replace Pitcairn. If AMD is determined to show something new then we might expect a new processor, however it would make much more sense just by putting Tahiti right there.

If anything I think they decided on such a name scheme because in their eyes it's better than having 10000 series and so on in the future... I think they would have been better off with their standard scheme which wouldn't be as confusing.

That is fine. Just do not forget to copy the other table too. They updated that table listing what the new GPUs are equivalent to.
