I hope they don't honeypot with drugs from Tor.

All they did was catch people already accessing the website or looking for it. And if they take out some drug lords using Tor at some stage, then so be it.

It depends on the security settings being used by the user. By default, TOR allows things like Javascript to run when visiting websites on TOR. Anyone can inject a site with malicious Javascript into a website that can expose a person's IP address, even though they have used something like TOR or a VPN.

This is a case where the ends justify the means. Yes, it's unsavoury, considering the content, but it led to identifying serious offenders.

Thing is, those visiting already knew of the website and they didn't get to see any of the child pornography that was originally on it, so the FBI actually did nothing wrong at all in this case.

Sometimes the only way to find the perpetrators is to infiltrate them. Check out the movie The Captive.

I run my browser through NSA ports to make their illegal jobs easier. :P

there is an alternative, it's called: "japan, doujins and loli"

and the 1300 better call saul

Even tho loli are just drawings, it's illegal in some countries... Which is something i don't get because well, it's a drawing.

No need to abuse someone to make it, so i really don't get that.

Oh well, i think there is still a lot of work that has to be done about CP, including some fixes in the law imho.

If they just kept the site up but not the content I would say "Yay FBI FTW" but if they also kept the content up and available that's a little weird. Did none of the higher ups see any problems with that?

Couldn't they achieve the same result hosting a page identical to the site minus the content? Like let the creep-o's visited, poke around trying to find the goods, all the while the FBI is uploading their info to trace.

Problem here is that you wouldn't catch them actually downloading the content. You'd have nothing to charge them with.

The FBI is full of criminals and there's no reason they should be above the law. I think whoever was behind this operation should be arrested for distribution of CP.

You can say "but it was a honeypot!" I say it's entrapment. They created further crime by continuing to host the content instead of shutting it down. If the material wasn't distributed in the first place people wouldn't have it. I'm sure the victims would be upset if they found out images of them were being used as bait by the FBI. The FBI should be focusing on the people creating and distributing CP, not the people that download it. They don't have their priorities set straight at all.

There's no reason these crooks should be above the law. Send them to federal prison. They knowingly distributed CP so that they could catch people, in order to receive bribes from for-profit prisons for increasing the amount of inmates. The government is full of corruption.

Agree that is good but not for the sake of owning it. I am studying Psychology an I truly believe that they have Psychological issue's that attract them to CP instead of punishing them for this Realy bad crime they should try to find out why it happens in the first place and then try to kill it at the source. As a general poeple like punishment more than reformation.

It's pretty obvious what's happening

People are naturally attracted to younger people because they're better mates

Pedophiles just don't make the connection that there is such a thing as too young

If they caught pedos than thats good. I still think its kind of a weird area/thing for a governing body to do.

But drugs aren't harming anybody, unless it's illegal trafficking from a cartel.

And the pedophiles didn't get to see the website's original content, they got redirected back to the login page. What the FBI has done means that they have the IP address of people who have attempted to access child pornography without showing them child pornography.

so they didn't really host it... they instead infiltrated and compromised the servers to reveal visitors IP addresses

that's genious! and i have nothing against it.

But yes I do think it's wrong that FBI is forced to release the code they used to infiltrate.

I am not worried about anything, I just didnt know how they could get the IP from Tor, now I do.

I have nothing to hide, I just dont like the goverment being able to monitor everything that the person do on the Computer. I live in Germany, and its way worse than the USA in this question.

Spoiler

are you comfortable with bums on the street monitoring your WiFi and everything you do on the Computer?

as soon as you plug in RJ45 or connect to a WiFi just forget about the privacy, anything you do on the internet is public and always has been public

internet anonimity is a fairy tale you read your children while putting them to sleep
