Japan plans to put kids in Internet "fasting camps", also in the US.

Yeh totally.  Life (these days) would totally suck balls for most people without internet, including myself.  I would rather die to be truthful than not have access to internet.  Trying to be "social" would get tiresome very fast.

The only bad thing about that video is hes using alienware.

aaaand thats adiction.

seriously. it's so weird that most everyone now adays (esp. in america) wouldn't be able to survive in a wilderness for 2 days. or hunt. or create something.

Why not force them to go to camp to learn usefull things about computers like teaching them all to code. They get to use computers but the government can now use them for code donkeys ;) #NEET4LyFe

I don't. I just think it's dumb. I need to further elaborate on that short, half assed comment. But, my comment stands.

If the internet ever goes dark, we must all meet. I recommend we meet at a Micro Center (computer parts retailer in US), or in Newegg's shipping facility in New Jersey.

offs :( Kids have no impulse control until their parents teach it to them. Adults can get addicted to almost anything and those that are need help but kids? Parents, start parenting ffs

What about sports? Are there sports addiction camps? I know people who live breath and eat (American) football, but no one ever holds that against them. I can't actually talk to them for long because I don't know what a linekicker does or what a touch up is but still, they're as into sports as most tech people are into tech, sometimes even more.

Or cars or card games or drawing or playing an instrument for 10 hours a day. If it becomes a problem with your life (like you miss out on birthday parties to play WoW) then I could see it being considered an addiction, but if it's like any of the "norms" I don't see why people make such a big deal about it.

I know exactly what you're saying here. There are people i just simply cannot talk to. I usually just stare at them and blink like they are aliens.

Internet camps is too extreme. If parents are concerned with their child's Internet addiction, they should do something about it themselves. No government intervention is needed.

If children are chained to the Internet such that their abilities to interact with other people are severely impaired, I blame no one but the parents.

If parents start early and encourage their kids to engage in social activities, sports, clubs, whatever, then they'll be fine.

If the parents can't be arsed to do anything with their children, well, online communities are there for them.  You can't blame the child for turning to a reality more engaging than that of the people around him/her.

I have no idea why you were quoting me there when nothing you said seemed to be in response to what I had said.

As a gamer I have friends who have been addicted to various games and so on. I have a mate who had spent over 20k on Magic cards and others who are addicted to MMO's. I have others who spend a huge amount of their time playing games or doing other activities and family who run marathons. Regardless of what you do, as long as it does not have a negative impact on your life its not an addiction. If it does then its a problem and you should look at it.

But here we are talking about children, children cant really have an addition to something that is not an addictive substance. Kids have impulse control issues, well more like no impulse control (at very very little) and especially if their parents have not taught this to them. And impulse control is something that IS learn't. Anyone who doubts that watch the kids who throw tantrums in public places and ask yourself why that started, normally its cause they wanted something. That thing is denied initially hence the tantrum, and so they win and as a result they do not have to learn impulse control as they get what they want.

I used to watch a lot of TV as a kid, I LOVED my Amstrad 64, and later my NES and so on, but I was never allowed to stay playing them all day long every day. And if I did not do what I was told, ie get outside and play or do something else, when I was told I ended in all kinds of trouble. So I learnt that certain things come to me in small doses.

We should teach our kids that, impulse control.

I quoted you because you mentioned adult addiction, which is where I was going with the sports thing. Either way, parenting is extremely important but sometimes it isn't 100% the cause, especially when the child gets older and knows better. There are bad people raised in good homes, and good people raised in bad homes or with no parents. It only goes so far.

When I was a kid I would gladly spend an entire sunny day on the internet. People would say that's a waste but I learnt a lot and I genuinely believe it helped me develop my brain at a young age and become smarter and more educated on the X amount of different topics discussed on the web.

Not only that but I also believe a day isn't wasted if you're doing something you want to do, i.e use a computer or play video games and sleep even.

How is using the internet, an addiction, If i may ask?

50%+ of the world is addicted then and even more will be as the years roll by as the internet becomes more wide spread and used more frequently.

and by that logic arent most of us addicted to drinking coffe, driving, breathing!?!

Depends on the people. hahaha back in high school I learned stuff using the internet xD as the class doesn't do much. I earn money through the use of computer and internet too.

for me no net = no income

kinda pointless though but instead of that they should do something like a anti smoking addiction it's pretty much the one that is not healthy.

Live your life like a dream.

Internet camp? What a bunch of bull****. It seems to me that the Japanese Government are trying to correct one of its biggest problems. A aging population, low marriage rate, and low birthrate. I believe Japanese Government are trying too change the behavior of its young people, to be more social with other people. Can't say I'm very surprised by this given Japan has one of the lowest birthrates of developed industrialized countries.

Test ideas by experiment and observation; build on those ideas that pass the test, reject the ones that fail; follow the evidence wherever it leads and question everything.
