Apple was rumored to enter the VR space with high innovation in the works.

These rumors might be true. But if you are a Apple user and can't wait from Apple version, here is one from  View-Master. The company announces its entry to the VR world, with its iPhone add-on Samsung Gear VR style device.

The VR headset is for Apple iPhone, something like Google Cardboard VR box, but in a plastic shell.

The product is named: iVR : View-Master Virtual Reality

81qBxVEVTuL._SL1500_.0.0.jpg

You too can be amazed like the kids on  the picture! Look at the boy looking at the end world  meteorite coming smashing to the ground, and the girl, looking a blurry image as the lens to eye distance is too high to properly see anything. Maybe she sees a cool mesmerizing random color pattern.

Quote

The headset comes from View-Master, which has transformed its classic red image viewer into a big red VR viewer akin to Google Cardboard. It's essentially just a big plastic case that you slip an iPhone into; you then open up an app that shows 360-degree videos, and you can look around the world by holding the viewer to your eyes and turning your head. It's a super low-tech way of getting into virtual reality, but it's incredibly accessible.

The View-Master Virtual Reality can be yours for only: $29.99 U.S, and is available now at the Apple store:

It is compatible with the Phone 5/5C  all the way up to 6S Plus

Are you excited about such product?
Did you ever have a View-Master when you were a kid?

I had one where it was a disk of images that would change when you pulled the handle.  Judging by the PC requirements for a good VR experience, I assume this will function similarly with an iPhone in it.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

This is such a bad idea due to the low pixel density of iPhones. In normal use it isn't noticed, but in VR you can notice the difference between a 320 PPI screen (iPhone 6/6s) and one with 550 PPI(Galaxy S6)

Make sure to quote me or tag me when responding to me, or I might not know you replied! Examples:

Lollipop destroyed the stability of my Note 4. I was super stoked for Lollipop too. :(

Can you use this or Goole cardboard to watch videos like on Netflix or does the content need to be made specifically for VR?

Depends on the implementation, but you need content aimed for VR. Basically, if it is a movie, you need that the movie is shot with 2 cameras which has the distance the same between your 2 eyes (although greater distance, will increase the 3D effect beyond reality, but makes it cool for a short period, then for some, the brain kicks in, and goes "Waaaaiit a minute... something is wrong here...Nice try bub!", and have a headache. Of course, you can only separate the image up to a certain point if you like doing that, then the image you see will become blurry.

Having the 2 cameras distanced to the same as your eyes, gives you the 2 perspective that each eyes needs to see, to give your brain the to see depth. That is why we have 2 eyes.

Some VR will do the next stage of the process (you want that, as the VR manufacture knows how to do it as it knows the VR headset specification and has the expertise) which is deforming the image, like so:

defaultFOV.jpg

(Image from Oculus Rift SDK: https://developer.oculus.com/documentation/pcsdk/latest/concepts/dg-render/)

To compensate for teh VRl lens-related distortion it produces.

Couldn't the same tech used in post to make movies 3D be used to make VR content? Also just movies that were shot for 3D seem like they should work. Instead of alternating which eye's view is displayed you just display each eye's view on it's own screen.

3D Movies are VR ready, if you have the player that will take each frame for each eye, and put it side by side like the image above (without the distortion), and send that to the VR headset.

One thing that I didn't mention is that... all you are getting with a  movie with a VR headset, is Stereoscopic 3D. Like when you go at the theater and watch a movie in 3D.

The real point of VR, is not just 3D, because we have 3D TVs and monitors for this. It is about you turning your head, and see the scene around it like you are there.

So VR is only awesome in gaming and simulators. In fact watching a movie on VR headset, and you move your head, and you are not used to it, can disorient you, because your brain expects to see where you turns but the scene is the same. So, 3D glasses with a monitor might be better.

I thought they had considered filming "VR movies" that instead of just having 2 cameras (one for each eye) it would be a 360° camera, so you would feel like you are in the movie and could turn your head and all that.
