UK to block VPN's

Go to solution Solved by Classics,

Isn't it ironic how the biggest wanker in the UK wants to block porn?

Mobile providers have had Cameron's hammer strike down on their services, forcing them to block content inappropriate for children. Mainly targeting adult material however has begun to target VPN's as it would allow users to bypass age restrictions and various blocks set up by the government. The problem is that every ISP is complying with Cameron's dictatorial ruling on the country as it stands and simply requires verification that the user is over 18 in order to view such content, however this is the internet and there is nothing stopping someone under the age of 18 forging a false identity and gaining access to these sites. The UK is currently under Cameron's all seeing eye and there's nothing we can do about it anymore and it just leads you to think, whatever happened to the Data Protection Act?

Pornography is just being used as an excuse to control the internet. My government can try but people will always find a way to get passed it. Data Protection ACt was probably there like every other law to make the government look they they give a damn.

Yep, its happening... The rest of the UK's plan to lock down the internet is starting. Blocking porn was just a sorry excuse to rule the internet.

How can they block VPN's?

They tried blocking sites like TPB but right away like a bazillion alternatives popped up.

Surely the only way to control the internet would be to start over with a private UK Intranet?

I have no real idea how the internet works so please fill us in.

HAHA. But really?

A country can block sections of the internet withing their own country, take china for exmaple where YouTube is blocked, (It can be accessed but not very easily)

That's ridiculous.

On the upside, the more things they block - the more likely everyone will opt-out, wait for it to get this far "huh, i want to watch Netflix, but it's blocked due to 18 rated films, unblock connection plz ISP"

Interesting quote from the article:

The UK example, however, begs the question how effective these blocklists are to begin with, and how broad they have to be to reach their goal. If a kid is smart enough to go to a VPN provider in order to unblock content, he or she clearly doesn’t want to be protected.

I think that i very true, years ago my parents had AOL *shudder* that had parental controls and the like, I found ways around it - although my brother (who is currently 13) may not even know what a VPN is he is most definitely smart enough to research how to bypass a blocklist, afterall he was quick enough to work out how to use a proxy site to access blocked torrents.

I'm just waiting for the inevitable blocks using this system that cannot be opted-out of, Yay Censorship!

EDIT: Another point to make, my phone carrier had this adult filter thing, it blocked access to most forums too, so even though I have zero need for porn on my phone, I still opted out so I could access sites I use daily -_-

Completely mad. But how on earth do they block VPN's? I mean are they blocking them one by one? there are 100's of thousands of companies out there.

Aaaaannnd how does the U.K want companies to operate?

It's ok, let's just block thing we have 0 idea about.

I mean, hiring a professional to answer all these question is too expensive, but going to war in a battle that isn't theirs, let alone no public support, sure, why not. We've got money for that.

The whole "it's for the children" argument is really pissing me off. We already have lots of laws to protect them, so why make laws to "protect them" and then apply those restrictions to everyone? It's just a cheap trick to make you sound like the bad guy if you try to argue against them.

By the way, the idiot "Johan Pehrson" (politician here in Sweden) suggested that encrypting voice calls should be banned (he suggested this about a year ago). First I laughed because it was so idiotic, then I cried because people like these who clearly have no idea how the Internet works, are actually governing it. Now I am scared because I thought everyone else would just think "what a moron" and then nothing would happen, but clearly these morons does whatever they want. I got a feeling the Internet will be ruined in a not so distant future.

The more I think about it, the more sense does all these tinfoil hat people like Stallman make.

The whole world goes up in arms over porn while kids in africa are starving. GOOD GUY BRITIAN. Just kidding guys, I think this is a pretty messed up scenario, it's almost as ridiculous as China blocking youtube and google.

The deal in China really isn't a big issue from what i hear. My mates dad lives over there and he has no problem accessing these "blocked" services. I'd imagine it's just the same workaround used to access sites that carry pirated material here in the UK. There's always someone smarter that will create a work around.
