AMD releases 16.1 Crimson BETA for legacy (non GCN) Radeons and APUs

this will work for

  • non GCN Radeons from HD5000 (including M variant) to HD8470
  • non APUs from HD6000D series to HD8000G series
  • Windows 7, 8.1 and 10 in both flavors (x86 and x86_64)

keep in mind these are not WHQLed drivers, not that it matters for end-user

Good. I guess they slightly re-evaluated their decision to stop driver updates for all pre-GCN hardware.

I think they're merely making sure the Legacy drivers have working Crimson software. So they'll continue to update it til they're sure it works properly.

Alternately, they only announced end of support to remove all commitment and responsibility from legacy products and will update at their own leisure.

I do believe the first option is the case.

I wonder if this will work for my laptop. I know it says that it works with M edition things. But my laptop does not like using drivers other than the manufactuerer. And of course my old laptop was a Sony Vaio VPCCA190X, so rip Vaio.

*sigh* I'd install it but it'd need to support a MR HD4250 at the same time, or AMD PowerXpress acts up badly due to the HD5650 having different drivers.
