Why did graphics chips used to be round?

I was just opening up an old computer, and the GPU is round.

Why are they square now/round before?

that is not round

 

also most chips are square

 

but the metal cap can be round

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

yeah it's just the spreader, lots of systems and iGPUs like that

That's just the heatspreader. That's how they did it before GPUs became powerful enough to require good cooling. The actual chip is underneath.
