Valve Switching Over to 100Gbps Infrastructure

Steam's traffic levels are growing about 75 percent year-over-year, currently totaling 450 to 500 petabytes per month or four to five exabytes a year, the announcement said. Standard game downloads are 10 to 40 gigabytes, and the Steam platform "has over 100 million users, averaging more than 10 million concurrent players and over two billion minutes played logged per day."

 

Yeah basically hot damn. Valve is seeing 75% traffic growth year-over-year, averaging ~10 million concurrent users.

 

I'd really like to see if they saturate even a 100Gb port.

I just wish they would bring back local server hosting for game files.  They used to allow you to set up your own local server to download game files, so that any local computers could then connect to the local server to get the files it needed/wanted.  This meant that if you had 2+ people on your local network, you only downloaded the game files once over the internet.  Then each local client downloaded via your LAN from the local server.  That would be such a godsend for those of us who have roommates/friends that want to play a new game, but you both have to now download 10-40 GB each.

I just use an external HDD, works flawlessly with almost every game :)

I normally just store the game files after downloading them anyways, but you used to be able to link your accounts with the server, and it would just auto-download games.  You could set it for all games in account, or as requested.  Just would be a nice feature to bring back, not sure why they ever got rid of it.  Seems easy enough to do, and not difficult to maintain.

I just wish they would bring back local server hosting for game files.  They used to allow you to set up your own local server to download game files, so that any local computers could then connect to the local server to get the files it needed/wanted.  This meant that if you had 2+ people on your local network, you only downloaded the game files once over the internet.  Then each local client downloaded via your LAN from the local server.  That would be such a godsend for those of us who have roommates/friends that want to play a new game, but you both have to now download 10-40 GB each. 

 

Havent heard about this before, but it does sound nice indeed.

It was an old old feature, originally designed for cyber cafes and similar locations/events, but it wasn't restricted in who could use it.  I think you had to pay a one time fee, like $20 or $40, but it was a fantastic feature.  I never bothered to get it at the time because I only had a few games, and didn't expect them to remove the option/service/feature.  Not that it would have mattered, from what I have read, they shut it down as a feature. 

 

But I really wish they would bring it back.

Click on Steam- Backup and Restore Games- Backup Currently installed program.

 

My friends and I do this all the time so that only one of us needs to download a massive game. We then copy and share it via flash drives.

I also use it to create local archive copies of games I like before uninstalling...so that I don't have to re-download next time I need to install it.

Valve's userbase and PC gaming overall is certainly still growing.

 

But I think even more than that it's the fact that game sizes have exploded in the last few years. The most challenging time is probably when a new AAA game launches and everybody is trying to download a 50GB game at the same time.

If it's a large game you can copy the metafile as well (sometimes you might have to restart Steam) and it's even faster.

I normally just store the game files after downloading them anyways, but you used to be able to link your accounts with the server, and it would just auto-download games.  You could set it for all games in account, or as requested.  Just would be a nice feature to bring back, not sure why they ever got rid of it.  Seems easy enough to do, and not difficult to maintain.

Theoretically you still can.
