Posted January 13, 2016 Hello, I am going to get a new pc(CPU and Motherboard) and stuck on the choice of Intel i5 4690K(or 4590) and Intel i5 6600/6600K(or even 6500) As they are on the same price range in my local shopping website. Can anyone provide the pros and cons or any suggestions as to which one to get ??? What I know(please correct me if I go wrong) : the latest 6th gen has problem regarding some aftermarket cooler, I am not looking to Overclock, hope the cooler that comes along will work. What will I do : This is not a gaming pc, it is for my digital art work, which needs a powerful CPU primarily. My confusion is Why are the prices same ? Posted January 13, 2016 Skylake no longer comes with a stock cooler. You will need to purchase one, such as the Hyper 212 Evo. Posted January 13, 2016 4th Gen is more than enough. Unless you are running i3 or maybe you want in on USB type C and all the new stuff there really isn't a great reason. Also, bending skylake chips is only because of morons tightening down coolers with their favorite Black&Decker tools. Don't use a power drill, and you're good to go. The more you know~ snip* If both platform cost the same, as in a 6600K + Z170 motherboard + DDR3/DDR4 RAM costs the same as 4690K + Z97 + DDR3 RAM, then there is absolutely no reason to go Haswell. Just go get Skylake. Although since you will not be gaming, and instead do digital arts, I suggest getting a xeon instead. Check out the price of E3-1220 V5/V3 to E3-1276 V5/V3, difference being V5 are the skylake ones and V3 are the Haswell ones. If you can instead use those, you will benefit much better. These xeons have very limited overclocking and lack iGPU, but are incredibly stable and have hyperthreading. i5 quad cores do not have hyperthreading. Hyperthreading don't help much in games but I suspect they will a lot in your digital artworks, and many other production type software. In different words, these xeons are locked i7 quad cores without iGPU for the price of i5 or a bit over i5. I suggest you get these instead. Boards may support both DDR3/DDR3L, but some will say that DDR3 works fine(users on here and motherboard manufacturers), while Intel says it won't in the long term. Posted January 13, 2016 Its the K series that no longer have stock coolers. OEM would throw a hissy fit if locked CPU didn't have one (that and the stock cooler is all that the locked versions really need). Especially with the beefier one that's included. Though I'm not sure how that compares to something like the Hyper 212 Evo in performance or even in height. Depending on the case, you could run into compatibility problems. Since there's only a pump combo mounted to the CPU and it doesn't move much if at all, that probably wouldn't be a problem.
