i7 5820k vs i7 6700k

I can pick up a i7 5820k w/ x99 Sabertooth for $650 at my local Microcenter.

But I also can pick up a i7 6700k w/ Z170 Sabertooth for $650.

This question is giving me a headache.

I will be gaming 80% of the time.

A little video editing on the side...

What path should I take?

Are you planning on overclocking even a little? If yes then 5820K absolutely

Yes I saw.

The 5820k beats out the 6700k in video editing.

But looses in gaming...

Also I heard there is almost no performance gain when overclocking i7 5820k.

5820K.

5820k imo

Why?

Benefit of 5820K at stock:

-More raw performance

-Better upgrade path (To 5960X)

-Quad channel RAM support

-Better PCI express support

Benefit of 6700K:

-Better IPC performance

If you overclock the 5820K, that one only benefit of 6700K diminishes.

So, yea, take your pick  :P  (spoiler, 5820k)

80% of the time.

Then get the 6700k

it can video edit just fine

the extra 4 threads of the 5820k will only make your rendering times shorter by a few minutes, which is not a huge deal

I render videos every day of the week and my 4790k does just fine at it

the people saying "you can overclock the 5820k to get better core performance!" are ignoring the fact that you can also overclock the 6700k to get even more core performance

also the 6700k can be overclocked further because it has a lower TDP and power consumption, if youre into overclocking

It's honestly a wash, really. The two will perform at about the same level for most things. The extra cores on the 5820K will lower some video render times for sure, but if you're just a hobbyist it doesn't really matter much. The 6700K has better single threaded performance, and likely will outperform the 5820K on anything that doesn't take advantage of all 6 cores and 12 threads.

The 6700K is the one to go with, given that your cost is identical.

4790k 4.9GHz @ 1.375v, HD 7970, 850 EVO SSD's, Corsair 750D Airflow Edition, SeaSonic 860w Platinum.

Someone's stuck on 4cores /8threads. The 5820k is the clear winner. The most recent games are starting to use all threads, and it'll only continue to get better for the 5820k with DirectX 12. My daily driver is a 5820k at 4.5 and it kills anything I can throw at it. Not to mention you get to say you're running x99.

Anyways, if the prices are the same, get the 5820k.

For mostly gaming, it doesnt matter..

But srsly? For the SAME Price take the 5820k. Similar ipc, if you OC the 5820k to 4 ghz, but 6 Cores.

But honestly, the Z170 board is retardet. Take an Asus Z170 Pro gaming, or Asrock Z170 Extreme4. Cost 100 bucks less. THEN the 6700k is a nice option.

Still the 5820k, the little bump the 6700k gives you isn't worth 4C/8T

6700k. The 5820k gives you NOTHING if you do nothing but 100% Gaming. But costs 150 bucks more~.

You can invest that into better things, like a stronger GPU, or a good headphone.

False, games now like more threads, and we have more threads. It's also the same price for the OP

Show me the test of one single Game, that runs noticeably better on a 5820k.

Even if you find 1-2, that run a few % faster, you still pay 150 bucks More.

If you have +10-15 fps more in every game, then sure go for it. But like that?

See here. Skylake holds frames slightly better.

OP already said he can get them for same price at Microcenter. Thanks for playing though.

I got the 5820k with MSI X99S Gaming 7 at Microcenter a few weeks ago. Anyone who passes up on an extra 2c/4t for the same price and an essentially undetectable difference in games is an idiot.
