For gaming? Then go for the 860k and put the saved money into a better gpu, you will also benefit from the 4 cores

Any other kind of use go for the i3

The Athlon (x4 860k) is better at multicore performance. The i3 wins in single threaded. No matter was(unless you already have a FM2+ mobo you should get the i3. The Athlon is the highest end processor on the FM2+ socket. It is essentially a a-10 APU without the graphics. The i3 is not the best, but IT IS LGA 1150 so if you get some more money later you will be able to get an i5, i7 to upgrade. (Note: the Athlon does not have integrated graphics as far as i know)

Most modern games need strong single threaded performance. Also the i3 has great upgradability, where the Athlon is the highest end CPU on the FM2+ socket.

Look at his budget dude, if he gets Athlon he can squeeze R9 380 in there, if he gets i3, maybe some other shitty GPU

Most modern games love 4 cores than they do single core performance, some games won't even run with dual cores.

I've heard that games such as Gta 5 and FC4 doesn't run well on a dual core anymore

What kind of games will you be playing? If it's older titles using DX9, then I'd opt for the i3. If modern games, then I'd be more inclined towards the X4 860K.

If you're going for the i3 for a better upgrade path, then you need to consider the purchase of a Z-series board in order to utilise overclocking if you buy an unlocked chip later on. Also bear in mind that the X4 860K can be overclocked, in which case I would definitely buy an A88X motheboard. Don't worry, they're not much more expensive than A68.

The i3 is not just a dual core CPU, it has 4 threads which are fully useful for gaming.

Yes, people around here seem to think an i3 is a fucking pentium LMAO, it's basically a dual core CPU using the i7's HT technology so 2 cores handle 4 threads at once, making it 2 cores with 2 virtual extra cores, gaming always see's the extra threads.

your right but with the money he saves with the 860k he can spend on a better gpu which as a bigger impact on performance. thats why most people like austin evans favor them in their cheap builds
